Learn the techniques required to produce stylish and contemporary hats on this new course designed specifically for those new to, or with limited experience of, millinery. Following the structure of the popular Contemporary Millinery Intermediate and Advanced course, each term will focus on different materials and methods to enable you to produce beautiful modern hats for both men and women: felt in the autumn term, straw and woven materials in the spring, and in summer term the development of patterns for structured hats will be in focus.
Each course will cover a wide range of professional techniques and methods using the specialised millinery equipment in our Covid safe studio and attendance on all three will provide a strong grounding in the core techniques of hat making. This is a structured course with an emphasis on design, creativity and use of materials. You will be encouraged to research and develop your design skills alongside your technical abilities. All students will be encouraged to pursue their own project work where appropriate.
Refunds are not available on this booking. Start dates may be amended on request.
This course will be delivered in-centre with social distancing. The online platform Microsoft Teams will be used to support learning. After examining and discussing examples and samples, the tutor will demonstrate the flat pattern method of constructing hats, appropriate stitches and finishing techniques. Technical support will be provided alongside additional learning material and handouts where appropriate. Teaching is both to the whole class and on an individual, one-to-one basis.
Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e.: progression to an advanced- level course.
