Collagraphy Masterclass: two-day bespoke workshop in Dorset for two people
Bespoke collagraphy masterclass with Genevieve Lavers in Dorset. This is a unique in-person workshop for two people, and it takes place in my comfortable indoor studio on two dates of your choice. It makes a nice birthday treat if you want to celebrate a special birthday with your best friend, or maybe you are two like-minded artists looking to add another technique to your repertoire? The cost per person is reduced if you come with a friend. Collagraphy is sometimes called "mixed media printmaking", because it involves the use of a variety of materials to construct the printing plate. It is a highly experimental and versatile type of "intaglio" printmaking. More importantly it is fun, and not limited to those who have prior experience in art. The results can be very surprising - collagraphy is a match made in heaven for textural, abstract images. It is equally good for representational themes too - if you are inspired by something specific, let me know and I will show the best resources and techniques to produce the image of your choice. I have been teaching these bespoke printing workshops at home since 2014. They are suitable for beginners or those with some previous printmaking experience. I am a qualified teacher and registered as a Supporter for the Trinity Arts Award. I have experience in differentiation to suit diverse learning abilities. I like to provide a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere which allows you some space to experiment, so I won't be looking over your shoulder all the time! I have entitled this course a Masterclass because the quality and quantity of information I can provide for two in my own home is far greater than teaching a larger group of people. Day one: You will make a minimum of three printing plates using a variety of textured materials glued onto a base of thin board. Once fully dry after the session, I varnish them. Lunch is included. Day two: You will learn how to ink the collage plates you have made, and then use my intaglio press to create your own original prints to take home. Lunch is included. The bespoke workshops are adapted to suit your individual creative level and interests - by having personal attention, there is no queue for the press, and you take home high-quality prints ready to frame. If you are new to collagraphy, I demonstrate all the basic techniques for plate construction and inking; I guide you in producing a set of original prints you can be proud of. If you are looking to build on your existing knowledge of collagraphy, I can customize the sessions to incorporate more advanced techniques. You use all my professional-grade materials, including oil-based etching inks and acid-free paper. BOOKING: The two days both last five hours and can be completed on consecutive days or taken a week or more apart. It's up to you - we just need to coordinate our diaries and we're good to go. Either you or your friend would need to place the booking, and I will send any communication to that person. You can arrange to split the cost between yourselves. You need to select a date for the first of the two sessions when placing your booking. The price you pay on booking is for both sessions and for two people. On booking we will agree the date for the second session between us privately. If there is any confusion about this, please don't hesitate to message me. If you require accommodation, there are plenty of options, and I am happy to advise. This is a beautiful area of Dorset; you can take a break on my raised "tea terrace" and admire the wonderful view across the valley from my garden. If you want to build this masterclass into a full holiday experience, I can provide information about places to visit nearby. So, let's print!
What's included in the price?

I trained and worked as a linguist for many years, until the creative streak finally took over. I am still inspired by foreign language and culture, and that has permeated my printmaking style. More recently, I have been exploring themes closer to home in rural Dorset where I was born and now live. I have worked in the education sector, including with children and adults who have particular needs, for just over 25 years. I have been teaching collagraphy at home since 2014 and enjoy sharing the trials and tribulations of plate building and intaglio inking with anyone keen to learn.
