Explore the beautiful textures and wide variety of marks and tone that can be achieved with collagraph, using a hybrid of relief and etching techniques. Your tutor Kristiina Sandoe is a master of collagraph techniques, managing to conjure the most atmospheric landscapes from humble materials and control the medium to render very fine figurative detail.
Artists from Picasso to Hockney have used collagraph to great effect, it’s good fun and such a simple process. Textured, printable surfaces are built up with raised collages, then the plate printed using our large Rochat etching press, leaving an impression on damp paper as it is forced into every crevice.
Running for two days, this class is suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills.
Day one begins with a look at examples of collagraph prints and blocks. You’ll create two plates by gluing materials to a base board, trying out pva glue, string, tape, wool, lace, tissue, paper, cardboard or sand – in fact anything with an interesting texture, then varnish it to receive and withstand ink.
Once dry, you’ll apply ink to your first collagraph plate for proofing and discuss differences in papers and how they are prepared by soaking.
Moving on to a second plate, you’ll be able to build a more complex block, applying what you have learnt from the tests. There will be opportunities to reflect on the textures and results discovered by the group.
For day two you'll be focused on inking up with localised colours across your plates and further developing the marks you have created. The second plate will be dry and ready to print and you can explore intaglio inking techniques with colour and wiping creatively to achieve interesting effects.
The print studio is a very friendly place, with lots of supportive people, a relaxed atmosphere, and a great community of talented artists who visit to use the facilities regularly.
