About the Course

Develop your garment making skills to a professional level. Previous attendance of x 2 beginners clothes making courses (or equivalent) is required for the intermediate level and two or more intermediate level courses (or equivalent) for advanced level .

The course is suitable for you if you have achieved competence in the use of simple patterns, machinery and garment construction but wish to improve and develop your skills to a professional level in all types of garment making.

You must have intermediate level clothes making skills and have used patterns in order to benefit from this class. Students should have completed at least 2 terms of Clothes Making: Beginner's or be able to demonstrate that they have successfully constructed and completed at least 3 garments from commercial patterns. This course is not suitable for beginners.

You should also have the following skills and experience:
• Students should have completed at least 2 terms of Clothes Making: Beginner's or be able to demonstrate that they have successfully constructed and completed at least 3 garments from commercial patterns.
• Students should understand what a grainline is and how to use it
• Students should understand what a notch is and how to use them
• Students should know what a layplan is and understand how to cut on fold
• Students must be able to thread up and use a sewing machine
• Students must be able to read, write and understand fluent English
• Mathematics and numeracy skills are essential

The Advanced Level is suitable if you have completed two or more intermediate level courses.

You should also have the following skills and experience:
• Students must be able to adjust patterns
• Students must be able to use a professional level of construction techniques and finishing
• Students must be able to solve intermediate construction problems independently
What you need to know before you enrol
• Working on patterns, cutting fabric and fitting can involve standing at high tables. Please let your tutor know if this is difficult for you.
• Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control.
• The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Seear Building and there is wheelchair access via a stair-lift.
• Please also note: there is no eating or drinking allowed in the fashion studios – no liquids at all are allowed.

What you will need for your class
A starting project will be discussed with your tutor at the first lesson although it would be useful to bring:
• a basic sewing kit: fabric scissors, trimming scissors, tape measure, dressmaker’s pins, tracing wheel, dressmaker’s carbon paper
• pens, pencils, notebook, A4, ring binder, paper scissors, scotch tape
Also:
• you must provide your own patterns, fabrics, haberdashery, threads, etc. for use on your projects but the purchase of these will be discussed during the first lesson
• paper and card are available for use in the classroom
• calico for toiling is available from your tutor at cost price
• you will need to purchase a sewing machine bobbin from the tutor for £1, refundable at the end of the course
