About the Course

Using a range of folding formats and shapes to clamp the cloth, discover itajime clamp resist. We will look at this process in relation to the Japanese art of clamp resist and contemporary makers working with these techniques and go on to exploit the properties of specific fabrics, patterning them in geometric shapes. Procion dyes will be used to resist dye cotton and soda ash resist to degum silk organza.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Use procion dyes to pattern fabric through clamp resist techniques
Degum silk through clamp resist techniques
Create a range of samples using these techniques
Exploit the behavioural properties of different fabrics using these techniques
Class format and activities
This is a hands on practical class in which you will be learning how to pattern cotton, and silk organza through the use of wooden and perspex blocks, clamped tightly together around folded fabric creating a resist. This will result in soft geometric patterning in various fabrics. De gumming silk results in a shift in the quality of the fabric surface.
You will be guided through the various processes through demonstrations, group and individual support. You will also be introduced to the work of various designers and makers using these techniques.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
