One day charcoal making course., Learn the ancient craft of charcoal making. This course is suitable for beginners and small woodland owners.
About this Event
Enjoy learning this ancient woodland craft with a small group, in lovely Heydon Hill Wood, situated in the beautiful Brendon Hills of West Somerset. The tutors Paul Calvert and Jane Crockett have been making charcoal in their woods for some years now and are able to offer you the tuition and experience to make your own charcoal, whether for a hobby or commercially . On this one day course you will learn how to empty, fill and fire a traditional ring kiln and to grade and bag up the charcoal.
Freshly brewed tea and coffee with homemade cakes will be served all day, and locally sourced produce for lunch.
What to bring
It will be physically demanding and dirty day outside, requiring manual handling of fire wood, and the finished charcoal.
Stout footwear or work boots are recommended. It is essential that you wear appropriate clothing for the weather and activity. We recommend you bring old clothes or overalls in which to change in and out of , and work gloves. Refreshments and lunch are provided, but it's also handy to bring your own water bottle and/or mug.
