About the Course
You will have the opportunity to work with a designer in this field of practice to use the full range of on-glaze techniques such as transfers, decals, enamels and lustres on top of purchased white ware to create surface design and pattern. The sessions will introduce each topic to enable you to create a multi-layered surface using these different techniques. Naomi will also explain where you can purchase these materials from different suppliers. There will also be an opportunity to explain basic photoshop principles to create images for the digital production of transfers.
By the end of the course you will be able to
You will understand how to decorate the ceramic surface with a number of different colour options and techniques
You will decorate a number of glazed white ware ceramic plates, bowls and mugs with your own designs
You will be able to collect work once it has been fired You will gain knowledge of basic photoshop to produce images for transfers ( decals) for surface decoration
You will have access to further information to carry on with designing and getting transfers made away from the college
You will be able to collect work from one week later once it has been fired
Class format and activities
You will be seeing pratical demonstrations of a wide range of techniques with different colouring materials to develop the ceramic surface. You will be helped to design the surface area of your selected glazed white ware You will be learning by practising a number of colour options using a wide range of materials
If you are interested you will be able to see how to use photoshop to develop designs that can be sent off to a company to get transfers made for you to apply in the future.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
What you need to know before you enrol
What you will need for your class
A notebook and pen is useful. You will also need an apron or old shirt. Your tutor will give you a hand out with all the information of suppliers address and contact details. There are bone china mugs, plates and bowls to purchase at a variety of costs. You may bring in your own items to decorate with each item costing £1 to fire
What you can do next
Morley College offers a wide range of courses at all levels of ability. We recommend you attend at least 2 terms on the beginner course before moving on to various mixed level courses. Students can also look to progress onto certificated Part or full time Ceramics or 3D courses such as BETC, BA degree or MA postgraduate courses. Your tutor is also happy to advise in setting up your own studio. Many students go on after several years experience to setting up their own ceramic practice and exhibiting in open studio / house weekends and local and national craft fairs and galleries.
