About the Course

This course will allow you to get a feel of what it is like to work with clay and glaze and begin to understand it’s potential to make a form. We will look at different types of clay and learn how to shape and mould it using a limited range of techniques. You will have time to experiment with the some options for decorating the clay surface through using clay coloured slip and completing the form with a basic introduction to glazing. There will be a charge for clay work to be glazed and fired.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Understand the basic process and timeline of making ceramic objects
Make a range of ceramic forms using clays and glazes
See the potential of how clay can be manipulated using different techniques
Understand a basic awareness of Ceramic workshop Health and Safety
Class format and activities
If you are a beginner student you will practice and develop skills in some of the basic construction methods and techniques. Each session your tutor will demonstrate new techniques and give guidance on project work, as well as encouraging you to develop your own ideas. Intermediate students will be introduced to more advanced techniques of making and decorating in order to further develop chosen skills through individual project work. You will also be introduced to historical and contemporary approaches. We will have group and individual discussions and a wide range of resources are provided.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
No this class is open to complete beginners and also those at intermediate levels.

What you need to know before you enrol
Both wheel throwing if using on this course and wedging clay requires a moderate level of physical fitness - if you have any concerns (back problems, for example) please come and see your tutor who will be happy to give guidance, or assistance if required.

What you will need for your class
A notebook and pen is useful. You will also need an apron or old shirt. Your tutor will advise you about which tools to purchase. We make a £2 per kilo charge for clay used before the first firing only.

What you can do next
Morley College offers a wide range of courses at all levels of ability. We recommend you attend at least 2 terms on the beginner course before moving on to various mixed level courses. Students can also look to progress onto certificated Part or full time Ceramics or 3D courses such as BETC, BA degree or MA postgraduate courses. Your tutor is also happy to advise in setting up your own studio. Many students go on after several years experience to setting up their own ceramic practice and exhibiting in open studio / house weekends and local and national craft fairs and galleries.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
