Ceramic pottery shape design, plaster model making and mould making for slip cast ceramics

Have your ceramic shape ideas transformed from sketches into plaster moulds ready for slip casting, or attend an in-depth course to be taken through this process with expert guidance. With over 30 years’ experience as a professional ceramic shape designer, product developer and educator, I’m able to assist all makers with their design projects.

I teach ‘one-to-one’ at dates to suit you. I help industrial designers, craft potters, students or anyone wishing to develop their skills further. You may have a large order to fulfill, wish to speed up the making process by casting from plaster moulds or simply wish to know more about industrial ceramic production. All guests are welcome to attend, regardless of current skill level and background.

I cover the following skills:
• concept sketching and shape designing
• technical/working drawings
• plaster modelling/carving by hand
• lathe and bench whirler plaster turning
• plaster sledging/profiling with a metal tool and template
• tea pot handle and spout modelling
Jigger/jolley plate and bowl moulds
• sprig moulding and relief plaster modelling
• plaster mould making (from simple drop-out to multi-part moulds)
• slip casting

You are welcome to bring a current project with you or start something new. Some guests bring along an existing item (such as a found object, existing ceramic shape or thrown pot) that they wish to make moulds from. My workshop is located at the former Spode factory in the heart of the pottery industry of Stoke on Trent and guests have the option to stay longer to explore this area and beyond. I can recommend various accommodation options. For those arriving by car there is free parking on site, or I can meet you on foot at Stoke-on-Trent railway station or pick you up from Manchester and East Midlands Airports (by prior arrangement and at extra cost).

If you would simply like a quote for me to produce the shapes and moulds you need then please contact me with your ideas, drawings etc and I will provide a detailed price and timescale. I deal with manufacturers, craft potters, students and anyone with a passion for slip cast ceramics.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

I charge £250 per day for all ceramic design and product development services.
