About the Course

Carving decorative and useful utensils from wood is an ancient skill. Learn the easy, time-honoured and low-tech way of carving creative spoons and gifts out of wood. Revel in shape and colours, whilst learning safe carving and finishing techniques to enable you to continue on your own. If you choose, you can add colour to your carvings or enjoy their natural beauty.

The Swedish carving tradition uses mainly axe and knife, which sets it apart from other carving where a variety of expensive chisels are needed. As well as learning safe carving cuts with axe and knife, the class will focus on designs that respond to the quality and expressiveness of greenwood. This simplicity and the use of natural curves in branches results in original pieces that have a unique and lively quality that can not be achieved with power tools.

Hannah Ehlert trained for three years in a coppice worker apprenticeship with a variety of crafts people at the Bill Hogarth Memorial Trust. She has run successful creative green wood-working courses for nine years, including hazel wattle hurdles,
Swedish spoons and greenwood carving and baskets and willow structures in the garden. She also runs family and adult Nature Connection courses and works as a qualified Forest School practitioner.

Hannah’s classes are fun and sociable, whilst also providing quiet, relaxing time, allowing you to become deeply absorbed in your own project and connecting with the natural materials.

The workshop is at Cowshed Creative, based in a traditional converted Lakeland barn at Browfoot Farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay on the farm.

All our tutors are carefully selected professionals and experts with extensive teaching experience. Whilst this is a new venture, George, who has set up Cowshed Creative, has many years of experience programming and running creative courses at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and for Cumbria Adult Education. .
