2 Day Woodland Spoon Carving Course (camping available)

This two-day course will immerse you in the process of hand carving your own eating spoons from greenwood logs. In beautiful Ellekers Wood (Woodland camping is available on site at £15 per night, please contact Mike for details) Campers can arrive on Friday evening and enjoy an evening around the campfire before the course begins on Saturday morning. Saturday will begin with a sharpening workshop to get your axes and sloyd knives into shape. (Carving tools will be provided to use if you don’t have your own set). We’ll then have a design lab session discussing what makes a good eating spoon and exploring the many different styles of eating spoon. After choosing your design and selecting your timber the rest of the day will be spent in using axes and knives to carve your spoon blanks. There will be a focus on pushing your axe skills further so that blank production is effective and time efficient. Saturday evening will be spent sharing experiences and perhaps some acoustic music around the campfire. Open fire cooking will be available for the evening meal. Sunday will begin with a hook knife sharpening workshop, and we’ll hone our sloyd knives ready for the finishing cuts on our spoons. The majority of Sunday will be spent learning effective hollowing techniques for the spoon bowl and straight knife finishing techniques for achieving clean lines and facets as you work towards finishing your spoons. There will also be a workshop on decoration techniques and a practical session exploring milk paint. Other topics covered throughout the weekend will include timber selection, tool choices, the 3 S’s of finishing cuts and self-care for spoon carvers. There will be plenty of time for your questions and discussion. This course is suitable for all levels of carvers from beginners to more experienced carvers. Participants will be contacted prior to the course to discuss personal goals for the weekend. The aim is that regardless of level you will leave the course with improved skills and techniques to continue your spoon carving journey. If you have your own carving tools, you are encouraged to bring them although carving tools will be provided for anyone that needs them. All materials will be provided.

I'm Mike Craig, a green woodworker based at the Otley Chevin Forest Park which is situated above the picturesque market town of Otley, West Yorkshire. I have over 20 years experience as an educator in countryside management and wildlife conservation and am a total tree geek. The only thing I enjoy more than carving green wood in a woodland setting is helping others to discover and develop their own woodland craft skills.
