Carve a traditional breadboard | Two-day woodcarving course for beginners
Description
In this packed two-day course, you will learn the ancient art of woodcarving while making your very own traditional, decorative breadboard to take home with you. Taught by award-winning woodcarver William Barsley, this course offers a fun and relaxed way to learn. You’ll be surprised how much you can progress and achieve over just two days! The date listed is the start date of the consecutive two-day course. Experience No prior carving experience is needed. The course is carefully structured to build your skill and confidence throughout the two days, and you will leave feeling that you can undertake your own carving at home. You can make the course more or less challenging based on the design you choose to carve. A selection of design templates is provided for inspiration. Course structure The first day is all about introducing you to the craft and getting you familiar with different carving techniques by practising some of the decorative patterns traditionally used on breadboards. You will then lay out your chosen design on your breadboard blank (pre-cut for you) in preparation for spending the second day carving your final piece, with time left at the end to apply a protective finish. What to bring? Besides an open mind and some enthusiasm, the only thing you need to bring is a packed lunch which, if weather permits, can be enjoyed on the green just a stone’s throw from the workshop. Alternatively, there is a village shop a few minutes’ walk away that sells some basic lunch items, and the Almond Thief bakery is virtually next door for pastries, bread, and barista coffee. For safety, please do not wear open-toe shoes Please note: The workshop is on the first floor and there is no lift access. All of our group courses require a minimum of three participants in order to run. If this minimum is not met, we will contact you two weeks in advance to discuss options such as alternative dates or a full refund. There is an age restriction of 16+ for most of our courses due to the sharp tools used. Two-hour courses can be booked for ages 12-16 if accompanied by a parent or guardian who will take full responsibility for the safety of the child throughout the course and ensure they follow instructions carefully. If the parent or guardian would like to take part in the course, please make sure to book on.

Maker
William has enjoyed woodcarving from a young age and decided to pursue it more seriously in 2009. Over the next few years his passion continued to grow and, in 2013, William left his 9-5 job to travel the globe in search of inspiration from master woodcarvers, documenting his journey along the way. On returning to the UK, he enrolled on one of the best woodcarving courses in Europe, completing a three-year diploma in Historic Woodcarving and Gilding at the City and Guilds of London Art School. He has since completed a number of prestigious commissions such as for the Royal College of Arms and the Houses of Parliament.
