Carve a Green Man Wall Hanging

X

Description

Learn how to safely saw, chisel, carve and sand your own Green Man wooden hanging. This two day course runs from 10am-3pm on both Saturday Saturday 6th August and Sunday 7th August - which will allow adequate time to complete your piece.

The Green Man is prominent in many ancient cultures including the Romans, Greeks, Celts and early Christians. In each, the head of a man (or woman) with a mask of leaves is depicting a close relationship between humans and nature. A leaf clad statue of Dionysus in Naples, Italy dating back to 420 BC is often considered the 1st of the Green Man images and is the precursor to the leaf crowned lord of the wilderness & nature popularised in the middle ages.

With the advent of today’s environmental and green movements, this vision has been adopted as a marketing tool and is once again being recognised as an icon of the forest.

This course will provide the opportunity for you to spend time in our specially designed outdoor covered classroom connecting back with nature while creating your own age-old symbol of man’s relationship with nature. There will be a central fire going to ease any chill in the air.

Tutor – Andy (the Tree Pirate)

Andy is one of the talented team of Tree Pirates that masterfully carved a number of trees on the new Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve. His wood carving skills range from the use of chainsaws to create large sculptures to the delicate hand work needed when developing smaller works of art.

He will be helping you to master the use of a variety of chisels and saws when creating your own Green Man from a seasoned piece of locally sourced wood.

We will have tools for you to borrow, but if you have your own, please bring them as Andy and his assistant will help to sharpen them and advise on the best ways to use each tool.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

The wood and tools will all be provided.
