Bundle Dyed Furoshiki – Reusable Wrapping Fabric with Deborah Manson

X

Description

Get prepared for Christmas and minimise your impact on our planet by joining textile artist Deborah Manson in exploring natural dye and the Japanese craft of ‘Furoshiki’.

Translating into ‘Japanese bath spread’, this traditional practice was originally used to bundle clothes while at the sento or public baths. Fast forward to current times, the wrapping cloths have been adopted as a method to wrap gifts and other items with the advantage of being reusable time and time again.

Using the technique of Bundle Dye and Shibori, Deborah will teach you how to use seasonal plant materials and natural indigo dye to create various surface effects and patterns through the repeated folding and tying of fabric before dying.

You will learn how to make an indigo vat and use seasonal plant materials to create several pieces of fabric Furoshiki.

This course is suitable for all levels.

Deborah works from her studio in Sussex where she makes textiles and works on paper. Her garden is an extension of the studio where she grows and processes plants for natural dyeing.

Her practice engages deeply with the act of making, an exploration of materials and the natural world.

Her aesthetic – lo-fi, handmade, imperfect – evolves from her interest in age old craft techniques and the cross overs between art, design and craft.

Whether working with paper or cloth she explores colour relationships, placement and composition and the juxtaposition of materials and textures.

Deborah studied Visual Communication at Central St Martins and Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art. She exhibits her work in museums and galleries and runs workshops and courses for people of all ages and abilities.
