Construct a Wooden Pole Barn

Construct a Wooden Pole Barn
X

Description

Back due to demand, this is your chance to get the 'hands-on' skills and knowledge to build a rustic pole barn using traditional methods.
About this Event
Enjoy this 3-day course with a small group, outside in the beautiful Brendon hills of West Somerset. This unique course will provide you with the tuition and experience to construct an open-sided timber barn, using mainly hand tools. Our tutor, Paul Calvert, is an expert forester and barn builder.

With delicious artisan, locally sourced refreshments, including lunch, you'll have the energy you need to keep building.

From building this barn you will learn the skills and basic knowledge to measure and create a versatile structure to suit your own specific needs. It can be adapted (as shown in the photo) by scaling the frame up or down, to make, for example, pony shelters, car-ports , wood stores or even a garden office, as walls can be added to make an enclosed space and a suspended floor installed. All without having to use concrete.

Having run this courses successfully in October 2020, and with requests from those who wanted to attend last time but weren't available, we're thrilled to be able to offer this course again. We'll be continuing the great work from previous participants to complete the full size barn, enabling participants to gain experience and skills on all elements of the construction; initial measuring out though to finally adding the roof.

What to bring

It is a physically demanding course outside, requiring manual handling of tools and materials; timber and roofing.

Steel toe-cap boots and hard hats are recommended. It is essential that you wear appropriate clothing for the weather and activity. The barn will be built on agricultural land, with uneven ground, steep slopes and banks. Refreshments and lunch are provided, but it's also handy to bring your own water bottle and/or mug.
