On this hands-on, comprehensive course, you’ll learn how to make a wood-fired oven using traditional building methods and natural materials sourced from the land around us.
About this event:
Spend the weekend in our beautiful beech wood in West Somerset learning how to make a cob oven with seasoned cob practitioner Tony Francis. Tony has years of experience building with cob and is an aficionado of all things wood-fired, not to mention an engaging and thoughtful teacher.
Under his expert tutelage you’ll build an oven from scratch with a traditional material that has been used for millennia all over the world. Tony will teach you all the stages of production; selecting the right stones to make a sturdy and lasting base, sourcing and processing clay from the earth on our land, mixing the cob (earth and straw) by hand and foot, shaping it into a dome, walls and chimney, and finally, using the oven to bake your own bread and pizza, and cook a limitless variety of delicious foods.
You’ll leave us with all the knowledge and skills you need to build your very own oven and a whole wonderful world of outdoor, wood-fired cooking will be yours.
Please be aware that you can't take the oven home with you!
What you need to bring:
Make sure to bring warm and weather-proof clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. We’re located at the top of the Brendon Hills and it can get wet and windy at a moment’s notice.
Wellies for treading in the clay, and if you don't like the feel of cob on your bare hands, some rubber gloves are advisable.
Accommodation:
Camping on-site is available at no extra cost if you bring your own tent or van
OR we have a bell tent you can hire.
There is a compost loo and water but no electricity.
If basic camping isn’t to your tastes, then there are an abundance of great B&Bs and a few more luxurious campsites and caravan parks in the area.
