About the Course
Bowl carving course at The northern bowl in Durham. The perfect place for a days carving.
On this course we will learn to carve a bowl, by hand using a selection of tools and techniques, which will give you the knowledge and skills to create more projects at home.
Green wood carving is a fantastic skill to learn as it can be done anywhere, with few tools and very little space. On this course you will use a carving axe, a selection of bowl gouges, a carving knife and a spoon knife.
I will show you how to use all the tools safely and effectively, how to split your log, wood selection, safely carving with your axe and you will be shown a whole host of knife grips that will give you the skills to carry carving at home. I have a whole host of different knives and tools for you to try out and we will talk about various designs and shapes to get you inspired for your next wood carving!
I will also talk about decoration and colour on wood. I use homemade milk paint and egg glaze as well as acrylics and oil paint/linseed oil on my crafts and I will show you how to use these pigments on your own crafts.
All tools and wood are provided, you are welcome to bring your own if you have them though.

This was my first crafting course and I really enjoyed working with wood using a variety of tools, to axe and gauge a bowl from a tree trunk. Nadine is a marvellous guide, knowledgable, enthusiastic and a natural teacher. Everyone in the class came away happy with a bowl of their creation after spending an active day working and feeding ourselves on the continuos stream of knowledge bubbling from Nadine, and plenty of tea and biscuits. We were led carefully through the processes of wood selection and treatment, splitting, axing, gauging and carving. We were introduced to several useful topics such as tool sharpening and decorative styles, each of which would warrant a course themselves. I've booked to go back next month for another course with Nadine to learn spoon carving.

I recently did a bowl carving course with Nadine and she's a great tutor. Everything was explained clearly and during the breaks she gave us further info on finishing, tools and looking after them and painting. I came away from the day with new skills, not just a bowl!

I've done a couple of courses with Nadine now. She's very engaging and a natural teacher. It's a great way to learn new skills and relax at the same time :)

Very enjoyable and informative course, so much so I'm in the process of making my own bowl horse. Nadine is a very skilled instructor and crafts person. She brings skills from many areas, she has patience and a wealth of knowledge. Nothing seems to be any trouble and she is able to help, whatever your problem or skill level or ability. This was the second of Nadine's courses I have been on and look forward to going on another to learn another skill. The course finished all to soon. I couldn't recommend her courses highly enough.

An inspiring and very enjoyable course in a lovely setting. Nadine is a brilliant tutor - very encouraging, explains things clearly, lets you work at your own pace and is always on hand to help. I came away with two bowls and the basis of a new set of skills. Great weekend.

I have done a number of courses with Nadine as she is a knowledgeable and patient teacher who works hard to make sure everyone knows what to do and is safe doing what they need to do. I've been on courses with lots of people who are superb craftsmen and not particularly good teachers but Nadine happens to be one of those rare people who is both.
The groups I've been in have been mixed ability and she has still made sure that everyone has gone away with something that they have produced. She has a good eye for detail and encouraging participants to stretch themselves.
Would recommend her courses to both beginners and improvers.
