About the Course
During this 3 day course you will make a fully working flat bow similar to those found at Holmegaard in Denmark which are believed to have dated from around 7000 BC. This is an ancient design of bow and is very effective. The bows made on this course will have a draw weight of over 50lbs making them suitable for the primative bow category of archery competitions. Having been taught to select and identify appropriate wood for bowmaking, you will start to work on a ¼ split ash log and under Matthews careful guidance you will first rough it out into the basic shape and then through carving and tillering form it into a well engineered bow using hand tools which are little different to those used hundreds of years ago. You will be taught the traditional method of string-making using linen and given an arrow.
The course cost includes overnight camping on the Saturday and Sunday night, all of your meals for the duration of the course, the use of a shower and a constant supply of hot beverages and snacks.
The course is intended for adults and is demanding in terms of concentration. We normally only accept course participants over 16 years old.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
