About the Course

Make your own sketchbook from scratch using the very attractive Coptic stitch binding method. By the end of the day you will have made your own A5 portrait sketchbook

Further information about the workshop

Coptic stitch is a beautiful exposed book binding style that resembles chain stitch. These books have an open spine which means the pages open completely flat. Coptic style books are ideal as gifts or to keep for yourself as a sketchbook, diary or notebook.

We will start by trimming paper (140gsm cartridge) into the right size for the book and nesting the trimmed sheets into ‘signatures’. The next stage will be preparation of the covers, cutting these from greyboard, and covering with your choice from a wide selection of decorative papers provided. We will then make the holes for sewing and will finally sew all the pages and cover together using Coptic stitch.

There will be many suggestions for how to take this binding style further in your own projects after the workshop.

Things for students to bring

Drawing tools: Pencil, eraser, sharpener
Blunt ended sewing needle with large eye (eg tapestry needle approx. size 20)
Cutting tools: Cutting mat (A3 or bigger if possible), craft or cutting knife (scalpel is too delicate), metal ruler

The following tools will be available to borrow from the tutor on the day, but if you have any of them please bring them as this will reduce the need for sharing.
Bone folder (for creasing paper)
Small awl / braddle (for making holes in paper and card)
Paper knife / clip knife / shoe knife (for slicing paper)

There is a materials cover charge of £5 payable to the tutor on the day which includes all materials needed to make one book during the workshop.

If you would like to purchase further materials to make a second book at home, then this is possible for an extra £5, payable on the day.

A small selection of tools and linen threads will also be available to purchase on the day, if desired.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?
