About the Course

Make your own hardbacked A6 landscape sketchbook or notebook from scratch.

This is a traditional style of notebook with stiff covers and spine covered in fabric and your choice of white or coloured inside pages.

We will start the day by trimming paper and card into the correct size for the book and nesting the trimmed sheets into ‘signatures’. The signatures will then by sewn together using traditional French link stitch, and the spine will be reinforced with glue and tissue.

The next stage will be preparation of the covers, cutting these from greyboard, and covering with your choice from a selection of thick cotton fabrics

The final stage is assembly of the book, which is then pressed under weights until dry.

All steps are fully demonstrated and there will be group and individual help and support

Things for students to bring:

Jam jar
Glue brush (½ inch stencil brush is ideal)
Drawing tools: Pencil, eraser, sharpener
Blunt ended sewing needle with large eye (e.g tapestry needle).
Cutting tools: Cutting mat (A3 or bigger if possible), craft or cutting knife (scalpel is too delicate), metal ruler.
Waxed paper to press your book and to carry your book home. The waxed paper from cereal packets works well for this.

The following tools can be borrowed from the tutor but if you have them please bring them to avoid the need for sharing.

Scissors
Bone folder (for creasing paper)
Small awl / bradawl (for making holes in paper and card)
Paper knife / clip knife / shoe knife (for slicing paper)

There is a materials cover charge of £5 payable to the tutor on the day.

Extra tools & materials:
The £5 cover charge includes all materials needed to make one book during the workshop. If you would like further materials to make a second book at home there will be a charge of £5 payable on the day.

A small selection of tools and linen threads will also be available to purchase on the day, if desired.
