About the Course
For students who have knowledge of bookbinding. Projects are self-directed and also provided through class exercises with a different focus each term. Areas covered include leather and Vellum styles of binding, Gold finishing and book repair.
In this course you will have the opportunity to develop your existing bookbinding skills through self-directed and tutor-led projects. This term, we will focus on working with leather, through short exercises and a complete half leather binding on raised cords.
Your self-directed work can be in anything bookbinding related, with support from the tutor. Things you may want to explore include various methods of forwarding and finishing, making decorative papers, artists' book structures, box-making, tool making, book repair, and more.
By the end of the course you will be able to
repair books using different techniques
gain professional bookbinding skills
make a fine leather binding
do gold tooling work
demonstrate awareness of Health and Safety issues in Bookbinding and safe studio practice with due concern for other studio users.
Class format and activities
There will be demonstration, group discussion, one to one tuition and practical project work.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
Have some practical bookbinding experience and be acquainted with basic forwarding and finishing skills. Be able to follow technical instruction in English language. Be able to work comfortably within a group.
What you need to know before you enrol
Health & Safety information will be given at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. Please let the tutor know if you have any allergies to materials or are pregnant.
What you will need for your class
Notebook and pen. Protective apron. Own books for practical projects. Personal tools - tutor can advise on what to buy and will provide a list of suppliers.
