“Bobbing Boat” automata is one of a series of works that upcycle reclaimed materials from our workshop into pleasing and kinetic forms. Parts may include bits of: chair leg, driftwood, Oak, Mahogany, pallet wood, beads.
Inspiration for the automata’s design comes in part from my ever changing stock of reclaimed materials and in part from playing around with form and function.
If you are thinking of this item as a gift, I can personalise the item with an inscription, how about "you float my boat" or "catch me if you can".
The creative process: I start with an idea for the subject of the automata, for example a boat. I do some picture research and sketching to try and understand the key elements of the subject, I mean, what makes a boat, boaty? Next I hunt around for scrap materials and get a feel for how they might go together. The other piece of the puzzle is how the movement will be created. Once that’s worked out there’s usually a bit of trial and error to get it all working. After all, each piece is unique.
The finished piece is Teak oiled.
Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have, I'm happy to try and accommodate requests.

Care and Maintenance of your automata. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight which could fade the paint. Avoid excess humidity, which could swell the wooden components. The model is not a toy and should only be used by children under responsible adult supervision. Excess for force or misuse may damage the mechanism. To clean, use a dry duster only. After prolonged use, the surface of cams maybe rubbed with a wax candle to reduce friction.
Packaging. I am very concerned for the environment. The majority of my packaging material is reused from deliveries I receive. Please excuse the slightly eclectic mix of carboard box, bubblewrap, air bags and scrunched paper you find protecting your model.
***Due to the reclaimed materials used, this item is NOT A TOY.

Had a great session with Phillip, he was patient and helpful and got the the balance right between instructing, demonstrating and just letting me get on with it! (Once I was confident on the equipment). The tools are really easy to use and good quality and I was really happy with the book ends I made. Thanks again!
Response from Quicksticks Workshop:Thanks Ben. I'm glad you had fun making personalised bookends. I just hope your cat doesn't take exception to the design and fling them off the shelf. 😄
This was an excellent introduction to working with wood. Philip explained everything really clearly, answered all my questions and kept it fun. It was exactly what I was hoping for and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Response from Quicksticks Workshop:That's wonderful, thank you.
Philip was amazing! I’ve always wanted to build a dolls house but didn’t know where to start.
Philip was recommended to me and through several correspondences we came up with a plan. Philip accommodated my brief while adding his own expertise.
I wanted to do as much of the build as possible, but knew my limitations, so Philip did all the main cutting and I now have a kit to complete in the summer.
He responded to my emails promptly and was so
helpful, I never felt anything was too much for him.
I’d definitely use him again and would highly recommended him.
My grandchildren are going to love their dolls house!
Response from Quicksticks Workshop:You're very kind Jenny. Thank you.
I had a BRILLIANT afternoon with Philip in his workshop. I really felt as though Philip tailored the time to my particular learning goals and experience (of which I went in with literally zip). I've come away feeling both more confident practically (my original aim) and creatively inspired. A week later and I'm still buzzing (like a fret saw) about woodworking!
Response from Quicksticks Workshop:Thanks for the kind review Matthew. I'm glad you enjoyed the session and now feel inspired. It was great meeting you and I hope to welcome you back in the future for another project with lots of laughs as before. Cheers
I had a great time! Philip took me through using various wood working machinery. Always happy to answer By questions I had. My family loved the product I can away with. Definitely will do again.
Response from Quicksticks Workshop:Hey, thanks for the review. Glad you enjoyed the session. Hope you go on to set up that workspace you described, and get crafty.
