About the Course

On this course you will learn:

How to transform the shape of steel using heat and blacksmithing techniques.

You will be introduced to the tools used by blacksmiths and use them to learn techniques that will allow you to manipulate hot metal into different shapes. By the end of the session you will have made a small item to take home with you.

You will try hammering, bending and twisting metal.

Who is the course suitable for?
The course is suitable for complete beginners who have never tried blacksmithing before.

What is included?
All materials are included in the course fee. Personal protective equipment is also provided and must be worn at all times. We will provide tea and coffee throughout the day.

What should I wear?
It is essential that you wear old clothes made of natural fibres i.e. not made of a flammable material such as polyester. You must wear sturdy shoes that cover your whole foot (if you are wearing sandals you will not be allowed to participate in the course).

What should I bring?
You might want to bring a note book. Please be aware that there are no cafes or shops within walking distance of the forge.

Age requirements
The minimum age for this class is 17 however we love working with young people and if you are the parent or guardian of someone younger than 17 who would like to join us for a class please contact us to discuss your needs.

Can I make a knife or blade on the course?
No, this is not a bladesmithing course and we will not be covering special techniques such as tempering and grinding needed to make a blade. However, if you are interested in bladesmithing an introductory course to blacksmithing is a good place to start.

Do you have longer courses?
Yes we offer one and two day courses and one to one tuition and also offer coppersmithing classes.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

All materials and personal protective equipment is provided. We will provide tea and coffee but you will need to bring any other refreshments you think you might need.
