Blacksmithing Experience in Grassington for 2 People (5 hours)

X

Description

Please come and join me at my forge in the heart of The Yorkshire Dales for a blacksmithing experience you are sure to remember forever. In my cosy, fully equipped smithy you will have the opportunity to forge a lasting memory using age old techniques.

Each student will leave having forged at least one item of their choosing and will have the opportunity to forge, punch, drift, bend, fire weld and cut hot metal into a piece they can cherish for a lifetime. Whether it's a rose, a poker, a bottle opener, a knife, log basket or tools for your trade, you'll leave with a great sense of achievement. In this 5 hour experience you will have the forge to yourselves and my undivided attention throughout.

Classes are suitable for absolute beginners; male and female of any age, or for metalworkers seeking to develop a new skill in forging iron.

I'll start by lighting the coke forge, then after a short safety briefing and demonstration you'll each be at your own anvil creating your masterpiece. Safety boots and clothing you don't mind getting dirty are recommended; all other safety equipment will be provided.

The pictures on this page are but a few examples of things that are achievable in the class, if you have something in particular you would like to forge please let me know in advance and we can make it work. However, if you'd like to turn up on the day and be spontaneous that's absolutely fine too.

Grassington is a beautiful village with walks up the river, across the Dales or through the picturesque Grass Woods. I would definitely recommend a stay in the village in addition to your day at the forge.

Classes are available 7 days a week, please get in touch to discuss your requirements; all classes can be tailored to your needs.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

All tools and materials are included in the price and as much tea and coffee as you can drink. However if attending a class longer than a half day you may wish to bring a packed lunch as food is not included.

Richard is a fantastic teacher, really patient, super friendly and talked through all the steps showing techniques to aid you in making your desired items. made the best use of time and let us be independent with what we wanted to make. highly recomend this and other sessions - will definatley go back again, we made an original fire poker, display hook and viking/pirate knife. loved every min even the blisters showing how hard we worked :)

I took the Damascus knife making class with Richard and can highly recommend this class, it was a fantastic day and the knife I made is beautiful.
Richard is clearly an experienced teacher, very knowledgeable and a very talented blacksmith. Having had no previous experience in a forge, Richard explained the basics and then it was hands on experience and learning for the rest of the day which was just what I was looking for. Richard was on hand at all times and kept me on track as needed, and the result was a great knife with a beautiful Damascus pattern, far better than I thought I would be able to create.

Just returned from a two-day sword-making workshop with my 17-year old. We both had a great time and were well looked after by the unflappable Richard who combined a relaxed and steady manner with some excellent tuition and master crafts skills. What I liked best was the balance of being taught, trusted and monitored so we felt pushed but never out of our depth (well perhaps once when our point needed rescuing). My 17-year old has a great talking-piece to make pineapples and water melons tremble and I have gotten over my fear of angle grinders. Got some amazing photos of the process. Cannot recommend highly enough.

What a great experience and course. Richard is a great tutor, is very patient and helpful.

If you are not used to swinging a hammer for a hour or more then expect a good blister or 2. That said it's totally worth it. You can't help walking away with something that you'll talk about for months to come.

I'd recommend this to anyone who wants something unique, fantastic to use and something no-one you know has.

I'm sure I'll be back in the forge soon...

Brilliant day. Wanted to make a shutter stay to match the ones on my Victorian house cos we're one short. I'd done no metal work before but Richard's enthusiasm and enjoyment of sharing his skills made it real fun. Demonstrations and guidance while I was working made me feel both that I'd made it myself and that it was always going to succeed. The friends I went with all had an equally good day, we felt very welcome. When I need to make more ironwork to restore the next bit of my house I'll be back!
Thank you Richard from all four of us.

Purchased for husband as a birthday gift. He loved the day, Richard was really patient, explaining the process all the way through. He kept him on track to ensure you came away with a high quality finished product. He has said he will be booking another session with Richard for himself whilst on annual leave again. A brilliant day in all.

Bought this workshop as a gift for my husband's birthday and he absolutely loved it. Richard was really friendly and a great teacher and my husband was really pleased with his finished knife. He is now hooked on watching 'forged in fire' and thinks Richard should offer an axe making course next which he would be first in line for!

Fantasic day at the forge! Bought as a birthday gift for my partner who is really interested in the principles of heritage crafts, and he described it as the best present he'd ever recieved. Richard is knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic about his work and teaching, helping us to create items we were incredibly pleased with.

In 5 hours, almost to the minute, we managed to create a knife, a door knocker and a hair pin, all shaped and detailed and pretty enough to want to use. The whole day felt unpretentious and personalised to what we wanted to achieve and learn, not just an 'off the peg experience day', which I was keen to avoid. Highly recommended.

Will be going again... guaranteed ! One of the best black smithing workshops I’ve been to so far, I went for one to one tuition and in 3 hours I was taught how to manipulate the Steele, punch holes, hot cut the steel and a barley twist, to finish it off the with my first forge weld, at the end of the day I walked away with Viking bog knife and a bottle opener. Couldn’t have expected anything else from the day and looking forward to moving some more steel !!! Would definitely recommend !!

I just had my foot in the door, had a forge and a make shift anvil at home but not a clue on how to blacksmith besides hitting hot metal till it moves.

I received this experience for my birthday, and it was one of the best gifts I’ve received.

Richard is an excellent blacksmith, he explains things very clearly and he is very patient. I entered his workshop knowing very little about how to blacksmith and left knowing a lot about moving the metal, from where to strike on the anvil, how to position the metal and hammering techniques.

During the time I spent with Richard we made a knife, key chain and a bottle opener.

Thanks Richard I can now continue at home practising what he taught me. I would highly recommend booking time with him.

I booked an afternoon with Richard for my husband as a gift - best decision ever! He had an amazing time and was so impressed with the knife that he made. Two weeks later and he's still raving about it! He said Richard was really knowledgeable and had a real gift for explaining things really clearly, and declared it the best gift he'd ever received! The booking process was easy and all communication from Richard was spot on. The photos he took were an unexpected and much appreciated touch too.

Thanks Richard, you really gave him a great experience! We wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone - actually, we already have! All the best x
