Please come and join me at my forge in the heart of The Yorkshire Dales for a blacksmithing experience you are sure to remember forever. In my cosy, fully equipped smithy you will have the opportunity to forge a lasting memory using age old techniques.
Each student will leave having forged at least one item of their choosing and will have the opportunity to forge, punch, drift, bend, fire weld and cut hot metal into a piece they can cherish for a lifetime. Whether it's a rose, a poker, a bottle opener, a knife, log basket or tools for your trade, you'll leave with a great sense of achievement. In this 5 hour experience you will have the forge to yourselves and my undivided attention throughout.
Classes are suitable for absolute beginners; male and female of any age, or for metalworkers seeking to develop a new skill in forging iron.
I'll start by lighting the coke forge, then after a short safety briefing and demonstration you'll each be at your own anvil creating your masterpiece. Safety boots and clothing you don't mind getting dirty are recommended; all other safety equipment will be provided.
The pictures on this page are but a few examples of things that are achievable in the class, if you have something in particular you would like to forge please let me know in advance and we can make it work. However, if you'd like to turn up on the day and be spontaneous that's absolutely fine too.
Grassington is a beautiful village with walks up the river, across the Dales or through the picturesque Grass Woods. I would definitely recommend a stay in the village in addition to your day at the forge.
Classes are available 7 days a week, please get in touch to discuss your requirements; all classes can be tailored to your needs.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
All tools and materials are included in the price and as much tea and coffee as you can drink. However if attending a class longer than a half day you may wish to bring a packed lunch as food is not included.

Brilliant day. Wanted to make a shutter stay to match the ones on my Victorian house cos we're one short. I'd done no metal work before but Richard's enthusiasm and enjoyment of sharing his skills made it real fun. Demonstrations and guidance while I was working made me feel both that I'd made it myself and that it was always going to succeed. The friends I went with all had an equally good day, we felt very welcome. When I need to make more ironwork to restore the next bit of my house I'll be back!
Thank you Richard from all four of us.
Purchased for husband as a birthday gift. He loved the day, Richard was really patient, explaining the process all the way through. He kept him on track to ensure you came away with a high quality finished product. He has said he will be booking another session with Richard for himself whilst on annual leave again. A brilliant day in all.
My grandson and I enjoyed this course. Richard was a really good teacher and helped us so much. We have a small home forge and have been self teaching. Doing this course with Richard has encouraged us to be more adventurous.Thank you Richard
Had a brilliant 5 hour session forging a knife & bottle opener. Never done anything like this before but after watching forged in fire on repeat my wife booked me in as a surprise. Richard was a hands on instructor, very helpful and welcoming. I hope to be back down at the forge again in the future.
Excellent day with Richard forging a Damascus blade. Great teacher and went through each step well and at the pace I needed. Result was a lovely blade and the knowledge I had done it. Highly recommend his workshop.
I bought this as a gift for my husband. We loved our experience, Richard was very friendly helpful and knows a lot about blacksmithing. We made a beautiful rose and even had time to make bottle openers. Would highly recommend, it was great :)
My son has had an absolutely fantastic day on the blacksmith course with Richard. He’s made the most beautiful rose and learnt so many new skills. He was absolutely buzzing when he finished. I would definitely recommend it for beginners and those with experience.
Thank you Richard and we look forward to seeing you again in the future.
Could not recommended this experience enough. Richard was incredibly knowledgeable and patient when instructing an absolute novice in blacksmithing. The whole experience was fun and a took place in an excellent environment. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the knife making experience and it is something we would both definitely do again with Richard.
Bought this workshop as a gift for my husband's birthday and he absolutely loved it. Richard was really friendly and a great teacher and my husband was really pleased with his finished knife. He is now hooked on watching 'forged in fire' and thinks Richard should offer an axe making course next which he would be first in line for!
Fantasic day at the forge! Bought as a birthday gift for my partner who is really interested in the principles of heritage crafts, and he described it as the best present he'd ever recieved. Richard is knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic about his work and teaching, helping us to create items we were incredibly pleased with.
In 5 hours, almost to the minute, we managed to create a knife, a door knocker and a hair pin, all shaped and detailed and pretty enough to want to use. The whole day felt unpretentious and personalised to what we wanted to achieve and learn, not just an 'off the peg experience day', which I was keen to avoid. Highly recommended.
Will be going again... guaranteed ! One of the best black smithing workshops I’ve been to so far, I went for one to one tuition and in 3 hours I was taught how to manipulate the Steele, punch holes, hot cut the steel and a barley twist, to finish it off the with my first forge weld, at the end of the day I walked away with Viking bog knife and a bottle opener. Couldn’t have expected anything else from the day and looking forward to moving some more steel !!! Would definitely recommend !!
Ok bought this as a birthday gift for my fiancé and he could not speak highly enough of Richard or the course! He had a great time. Would recommend to anyone!
I booked this experience day for my son and his grandad to stay and watch. They havent stopped talking about it since and has said it was the best present he has ever had. Well worth every penny.
Richard had gone out of his way to contact me prior to his arrival taking the time & effort to prepare their day ahead. Ensuring my son got the best from his day at the forge & made things of interest to him.
On the day Richard gave my son a choice of what he would like to make. He learned so much from the day spent there and Richard's skills were all shared with him he made various items to bring home with him and achieved so much.
My son has set up his own little forge at home now using all the techniques he learned just from this day at Richard's forge.
Well worth every penny to see my son & my Dad's face when they got home. They had good banter all day with Richard making the whole experience fun exciting and so valuable to them.
I would not hesitate to highly recommend Richard after all the positive things I've heard about their day so I would definitely book this experience you won't be disappointed.
Also thankyou Richard for making my son's day with you so special, something he has always wanted to and continues to do now with all he has learned from you. 😁👍👍👍
I just had my foot in the door, had a forge and a make shift anvil at home but not a clue on how to blacksmith besides hitting hot metal till it moves.
I received this experience for my birthday, and it was one of the best gifts I’ve received.
Richard is an excellent blacksmith, he explains things very clearly and he is very patient. I entered his workshop knowing very little about how to blacksmith and left knowing a lot about moving the metal, from where to strike on the anvil, how to position the metal and hammering techniques.
During the time I spent with Richard we made a knife, key chain and a bottle opener.
Thanks Richard I can now continue at home practising what he taught me. I would highly recommend booking time with him.
I booked an afternoon with Richard for my husband as a gift - best decision ever! He had an amazing time and was so impressed with the knife that he made. Two weeks later and he's still raving about it! He said Richard was really knowledgeable and had a real gift for explaining things really clearly, and declared it the best gift he'd ever received! The booking process was easy and all communication from Richard was spot on. The photos he took were an unexpected and much appreciated touch too.
Thanks Richard, you really gave him a great experience! We wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone - actually, we already have! All the best x
