Blacksmithing Experience in Grassington for 2 People (3 hours)

X

Description

Please come and join me at my forge in the heart of The Yorkshire Dales for a blacksmithing experience you are sure to remember forever. In my cosy, fully equipped smithy you will have the opportunity to forge a lasting memory using age-old techniques.

Each student will leave having forged at least one item of their choosing and will have the opportunity to forge, punch, drift, bend, fire weld and cut hot metal into a piece they can cherish for a lifetime. Whether it's a poker, a bottle opener, a knife or a tool for your trade, you'll leave with a great sense of achievement.

Classes are suitable for absolute beginners; male and female of any age, or for metalworkers seeking to develop a new skill in forging iron.

I'll start by lighting the forge, then after a short safety briefing and demonstration, you'll each be at your own anvil creating your masterpiece. Safety boots and clothing you don't mind getting dirty are recommended; all other safety equipment will be provided.

The pictures on this page are but a few examples of things that are achievable in the class; if you have something, in particular, you would like to forge please let me know in advance and we can make it work. However, if you'd like to turn up on the day and be spontaneous that's absolutely fine too. If you're looking to spend longer in the forge making more items or a more complicated piece, then you may wish to consider the 5-hour course that is also available.

Grassington is a beautiful village with walks up the river, across the Dales or through the picturesque Grass Woods. I would definitely recommend a stay in the village in addition to your day at the forge.

Classes are available 7 days a week, please get in touch to discuss your requirements; all classes can be tailored to your needs.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

All tools and materials are included in the price and as much tea and coffee as you can drink. However, if attending a class longer than a half-day you may wish to bring a packed lunch as food is not included.

What an excellent way to spend a morning, I simply cannot recommend this experience enough.

Richard is an engaging, skilled, knowledgeable and down to earth tutor.
I made a number of bottle openers during my session, but am eager to visit again, possibly with friends to try my hand at something bigger.

If you're unsure what you can make in the time span you're considering then speak to Richard before booking.

Don't hesitate, do it, you won't regret it.

I had a wonderful day with Richard at his forge. He was a wonderful teacher, in a very relaxed environment and gave me a real insight into being a blacksmith. I came away with a Viking knife and a poker which I made myself under the tuition of Richard. I had a brilliant day.

I booked the Damascus knife making course for my partners birthday, I'm so glad I did.

My partner was smiling ear to ear after his day with Richard, his knowledge and patience is amazing. My partner has not stopped talking about his amazing day spent making the knife of his dreams. He will be going back to do axe and sword making, he has finally found his happy place and can't wait to go back.
Thank you Richard it was worth every penny to see him so happy.

His patience and skill enabling us to make products we will cherish. Thank you Richard for a great session, already planning our next visit and looking for ideas for what to make.

What an incredible day.
My husband and I, who are in our mid seventies, made a most beautiful and unique sword.

Richard, the blacksmith is a master craftsman and took us through every step with such patience (and good humour).

Many thanks Richard.

We'll be back!

Richard was incredibly welcoming and a truely down to earth guy. The day was very personal with only 2 of us on the course that day. Full of knowledge and life experiences. It was an amazing day and we appreciate Richard making it so persin centred. We both hope to be back again in the future.

I cannot say enough how much we loved this. I bought this as a surprise 50th birthday gift for my partner - it was the 2 day sword making course.

Neither of us have an any experience at all but with Richard guiding the way, we literally made a sword. Ourselves. A sword. Like Conan the Barbarian.

Richard was a wonderful teacher - nothing was awkward, or scary and it really was a lovely thing to do as a couple.

We will most likely book something else to do in the future because it was worth every single penny and we loved Richard.

All our friends were asking for info so if our friends aren't keeping him busy, please make sure you book!!

Thank you so much xx

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish, I was really impressed with the knife I made and how we got into the thick of it right off the bat. So much so that I'm considering going back to make a full set of kitchen knives.

I can't recommend this experience highly enough and that comes from the expert teaching of Richard.

Brilliant experience !!!

My wife booked me on a Damascus Knife making course with Richard as a birthday present.
I knew little to nothing about making a knife or blacksmithing so was a complete novice.
Richard has an excellent approach to mentoring, he gives clear instructions and lets you do the work without jumping in, however If I needed help he was straight over and gave great advice drawing from what is obviously a wealth of experience.
The facilities are great and has everything you would need to produce whatever you can dream of.
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and can’t stop talking about it. I absolutely recommend taking a class with Richard.

Thanks

Richard

Great value for money & a really great guy!
Richard is extremely helpful and patient!
I booked this course for myself and my partner, I picked it up much quicker so Richard really helped my partner with her work & it came up trumps!
Very happy, would 100% recommend and I will be back and Ember again!
Thanks Richard!

What an amazing experience! Bought as a birthday gift and it was so much more than we could have hoped for. Richard is so knowledgeable and great company (makes a lovely brew too)!! The pictures taken throughout the day were an extra special touch and turned out brilliantly.
The booking process was really straight forward and all communication was clear. I would highly recommend this experience and will be purchasing more in the future for other family members.
Thank you so much for everything Richard!

I managed to get a place on Richards course at the last minute and I am so pleased that I did. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and I can’t remember a time when a day has passed so quickly. The tuition was spot on just the right amount of guidance, advice, and a little help when needed but it left you feeling that you were absolutely the one that has made the knife from start to finish. If you have always wanted to give blade smithing a go then I can’t recommend this enough, but be warned you do leave with the feeling that you want to do more.

You've read the other reviews right? If you have then you already know Richard is courteous, knowledgeable, friendly, funny, interesting, and dedicated to his craft. As a teacher he has the perfect balance of when when to step in to provide the benefit of his experience and skill and also when not to step in and let folks bash away, make mistakes and the correct themselves.

Unmissable for all the "forged in fire" junkies out there. The hours in the forge will give you an exquisite taster for the real experience within a working forge keeping the craft and traditions of the past alive for this and future generations.

Very much looking forward to the next session - What a phenomenal day!

A long-awaited gift from my gf, as I have an interest in blacksmithing. I had an amazing time making something unique for the house. Richard was an excellent teacher in passing the basics on to me and the instruction for the trickery skills was fantastic. Family members have been putting suggestions in for gifts for my next visit haha. Stoke up the forges and get them ready.

My son and I spent a highly enjoyable afternoon making Viking-style knives. Richard was friendly and helpful and took the time to explain things well. We were able to tackle a wide range of techniques and were surprised by what we were able to achieve in the time. Richard was an enthusiastic teacher and made sure we got the most out of the afternoon. Highly recommended.

Got a sword making workshop for a birthday gift. We went in not anything about blacksmithing. Richard is clearly very good at what he does and is great at explaining how to do it. We thought he stepped in to help just the right amount as well but let us get on with the bits we could do.

Great experience and would definitely recommend!

The whole day was great! We were there for 5 hours and both made something to take away. Richard was a great teacher, left us to get on with things and stepped in if we needed. It's a super fun activity to give a try. Would recommend.

Really enjoyable. Struggled at first to find the location but enjoyed taking the scenic route to it. Richard happily took on the challenge of making the sword and it turned out fairly decent considering it was a first for me. Thank you Richard. Would definitely recommend for strong and scrawny alike.

I took the Damascus knife making class with Richard and can highly recommend this class, it was a fantastic day and the knife I made is beautiful.
Richard is clearly an experienced teacher, very knowledgeable and a very talented blacksmith. Having had no previous experience in a forge, Richard explained the basics and then it was hands on experience and learning for the rest of the day which was just what I was looking for. Richard was on hand at all times and kept me on track as needed, and the result was a great knife with a beautiful Damascus pattern, far better than I thought I would be able to create.

Just returned from a two-day sword-making workshop with my 17-year old. We both had a great time and were well looked after by the unflappable Richard who combined a relaxed and steady manner with some excellent tuition and master crafts skills. What I liked best was the balance of being taught, trusted and monitored so we felt pushed but never out of our depth (well perhaps once when our point needed rescuing). My 17-year old has a great talking-piece to make pineapples and water melons tremble and I have gotten over my fear of angle grinders. Got some amazing photos of the process. Cannot recommend highly enough.

What a great experience and course. Richard is a great tutor, is very patient and helpful.

If you are not used to swinging a hammer for a hour or more then expect a good blister or 2. That said it's totally worth it. You can't help walking away with something that you'll talk about for months to come.

I'd recommend this to anyone who wants something unique, fantastic to use and something no-one you know has.

I'm sure I'll be back in the forge soon...

Brilliant day. Wanted to make a shutter stay to match the ones on my Victorian house cos we're one short. I'd done no metal work before but Richard's enthusiasm and enjoyment of sharing his skills made it real fun. Demonstrations and guidance while I was working made me feel both that I'd made it myself and that it was always going to succeed. The friends I went with all had an equally good day, we felt very welcome. When I need to make more ironwork to restore the next bit of my house I'll be back!
Thank you Richard from all four of us.

Purchased for husband as a birthday gift. He loved the day, Richard was really patient, explaining the process all the way through. He kept him on track to ensure you came away with a high quality finished product. He has said he will be booking another session with Richard for himself whilst on annual leave again. A brilliant day in all.

Bought this workshop as a gift for my husband's birthday and he absolutely loved it. Richard was really friendly and a great teacher and my husband was really pleased with his finished knife. He is now hooked on watching 'forged in fire' and thinks Richard should offer an axe making course next which he would be first in line for!

Lindsey Coombs - - #31195

Fantasic day at the forge! Bought as a birthday gift for my partner who is really interested in the principles of heritage crafts, and he described it as the best present he'd ever recieved. Richard is knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic about his work and teaching, helping us to create items we were incredibly pleased with.

In 5 hours, almost to the minute, we managed to create a knife, a door knocker and a hair pin, all shaped and detailed and pretty enough to want to use. The whole day felt unpretentious and personalised to what we wanted to achieve and learn, not just an 'off the peg experience day', which I was keen to avoid. Highly recommended.

Will be going again... guaranteed ! One of the best black smithing workshops I’ve been to so far, I went for one to one tuition and in 3 hours I was taught how to manipulate the Steele, punch holes, hot cut the steel and a barley twist, to finish it off the with my first forge weld, at the end of the day I walked away with Viking bog knife and a bottle opener. Couldn’t have expected anything else from the day and looking forward to moving some more steel !!! Would definitely recommend !!

I just had my foot in the door, had a forge and a make shift anvil at home but not a clue on how to blacksmith besides hitting hot metal till it moves.

I received this experience for my birthday, and it was one of the best gifts I’ve received.

Richard is an excellent blacksmith, he explains things very clearly and he is very patient. I entered his workshop knowing very little about how to blacksmith and left knowing a lot about moving the metal, from where to strike on the anvil, how to position the metal and hammering techniques.

During the time I spent with Richard we made a knife, key chain and a bottle opener.

Thanks Richard I can now continue at home practising what he taught me. I would highly recommend booking time with him.

I booked an afternoon with Richard for my husband as a gift - best decision ever! He had an amazing time and was so impressed with the knife that he made. Two weeks later and he's still raving about it! He said Richard was really knowledgeable and had a real gift for explaining things really clearly, and declared it the best gift he'd ever received! The booking process was easy and all communication from Richard was spot on. The photos he took were an unexpected and much appreciated touch too.

Thanks Richard, you really gave him a great experience! We wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone - actually, we already have! All the best x
