About the Course

1 day course available to one or two people

I cover all the basic forging practices required to start Blacksmithing as a hobby such as drawing out to a taper, scrolling, set downs, punching, cutting with a chisel and twisting. Depending how well someone learns we can also make something such as a poker or a knife.

Please message or phone to inquire about course dates before purchasing. No best offers will be accepted!

Beginners need to be watched throughout the day so that they do not burn the metal they are working on in the fire, which reach's up to 1500 (the temperature metal melts and burns) to 2000 Celsius.

The 1 day course is suitable for absolute beginners, male or female, from the age of 16 upwards; or for metalworkers seeking to gain a basic understanding of iron-forging. Tea and coffee is provided!

Introducing students to the basic operations of blacksmithing through a tightly-planned programme of object-based procedures, there is plenty of sympathetic expert help available if any aspect becomes a struggle.

Once the fires are lit and the health and safety chat out of the way we will get straight down to the business of hammering some hot steel.

The day is fully hands on and as well as learning the basic principles of blacksmithing. Techniques for tapering, hole punching, splitting and riveting will be covered.

•Basic metallurgy; metal, steel and non-ferrous
•Judging heat of metal by its colour
•Effect on metal of different temperatures

The Forge workshop is situated in the rural outskirts of Long Clawson in the heart of the Vale of Belvior in north Leicestershire

There are no pre-arranged course dates. Courses are run as required - just ask for the date you would like and we will check the diary.

What to wear?
You should wear overalls or old clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty or damaged, clothes must be natural fibers (cotton or denim) absolutely no man-made fibers – things like shell suits can melt and cause unbelievable burns. Trousers must be full length and the same goes for sleeves.

Feel free to phone if you have any questions.

Accommodation can be provided at Bouverie lodge in Nether Broughton, which is a B & B on a bison farm in Nether Broughton.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Materials are included in the course price, there is a large stock of mild steel available but if you need a specific size then please make sure I have it in stock before your lesson. Health and safety gear is provided as well as tools. We do ask you to wear your own steel toecap safety boots.

Lunch, tea, coffee and biscuits are included.

You will need old clothes you don't mind ruining, cotton/denim trousers [that cover the tops of your shoes so no coke/metal can fall in], trainers, shoes, cotton t-shirts/jumpers are all good. No shorts, flip flops, football t-shirts or shell suits [synthetics] but sensible clothing that will protect you from hot flying coke and sparks.

If you have any other questions, please get in touch.
Thank you.

My son took the course with Chester and enjoyed it "immensely". It definitely fed his sparked interest in blacksmithing, and he'd love to do more. Chester was welcoming and patient, and I could see my son completely at ease by the end of the day. Thank you!

I had a fantastic day with Chester learning the basics of blacksmithing. I feel completely inspired to continue learning. Chester is patient and friendly and a great tutor. I had a full one to one day and finished by making one half of a pair of tongs. Brilliant experience and thoroughly recommended.

This was an excellent practical full day's introduction to blacksmithing. During the very enjoyable day I did squaring, drawing out, scrolling, off-setting, up-setting and twisting. Chester is likeable, patient and knowledgeable. I had a whole day (9.45 to 18.00) of one to one tuition for a very modest cost.

I would recommend this course to anyone, male or female of any age over 14. Forging is a fascinating skill that engineers and artist should experience, although everyone would find it fascinating .

I had a great time learning to forge and weld in the workshop. Chester was very patient and there was a very relaxed atmosphere.

Really good course! Chester was a very informative, down to earth tutor. Learnt a lot in the day and would certainly go back for a second day. Definitely recommend for the newcomer to blacksmithing!
