Printmaking taster workshop in Dorset for one person

Description

Let me introduce you to three methods of printmaking: - Printing from Tetrapak cartons (intaglio process) - Transfer monoprinting (relief process) - Monotype (relief process) What is Tetrapak printing? This is a fun way to create intaglio prints by upcycling empty Tetrapak cartons. You will learn the "intaglio" method of inking and will use my intaglio (roller) press. Intaglio inking involves working ink into the grooves you have created in the Tetrapak surface, using a cloth called "scrim". There are all sorts of exciting ways to make your prints unique by playing with cut or ripped edges to create alternatives to the standard rectangular format. You can also hand-tint your prints after printing. I will show you how. What is transfer monoprinting? This is a good technique for anyone who enjoys sketching, but there are ways to make it easier if you are not confident at drawing. Ink is rolled onto a glass plate and then blotted. Paper is placed on top of the ink and your design is drawn onto the back of the paper. That's the basic technique, but there are all sorts of ways to interpret it! No press required. What is monotype? For this technique, ink is rolled onto a flexible plastic plate. You then manipulate the ink by wiping it away or marking into it. It sounds simple, and it is! But you'll be getting used to thinking "from dark to light" rather than "from light to dark". Don't worry, I will show you! You will be using my intaglio (roller) press for your monotypes. What happens on the day? When you arrive, I will introduce the three techniques mentioned above and together we can work out the priorities and themes. If you only want to focus on one of the techniques, that's fine. You will be able to work in more depth on it and go home with several prints using that chosen technique. If you want to have a go at all three, you may only achieve one print from each technique, but you will have a good idea of the methods for all three. The 5-hour session goes remarkably quickly, and you can pace it according to your own energy levels. We stop for lunch but tend to have coffee and tea as we work. It's quite messy, as I use professional oil-based printing inks. I can provide gloves but please wear old clothes. PLEASE NOTE: I also teach collagraphy! This is a two-day masterclass. Try as I might, I cannot work out a way of doing this on one single day. Collagraphy involves building a collaged printing surface on one day, varnishing it, and inking it on a separate day when it is fully dry. I will not be teaching collagraphy on this one-day taster workshop, but if you are interested in learning about it, please see the details in my other advertised course here on craftcourses.com

I trained and worked as a linguist for many years, until the creative streak finally took over. I am still inspired by foreign language and culture, and that has permeated my printmaking style. More recently, I have been exploring themes closer to home in rural Dorset where I was born and now live. I have worked in the education sector, including with children and adults who have particular needs, for just over 25 years. I have been teaching collagraphy at home since 2014 and enjoy sharing the trials and tribulations of plate building and intaglio inking with anyone keen to learn.
