About the Course
This hands on course will be your first step into woodturning and will give you a firm foundation in all the basic skills of woodturning. The course is aimed at novices who wish to try out a new skill while allowing you create your own pieces on the lathe.
The first day focuses on understanding and using the lathe safely, tool sharpening and tool identification. Once these topics are covered we will then work on turning wood between centres, using the roughing gouge, spindle gouge, skew chisel and parting tool.
The second day will be focused on bowl turning and face plate turning, whilst you will still use some of the tools from the previous day the main focus will be on the use of the bowl gouge. Throughout both days emphasis is given to mastering new skills in such a way that when the student returns to their own workshop they can put into practice all they have learnt.
You will take home a number of pieces, from a honey dipper, pen, a garden dibber and a bowl and depending on your skill level there are other projects too.

I have now completed all three of Ciarán's public courses in woodworking and wood turning and each one builds seamlessly on the other. The ability to be a dazzling master craftsman at one end of the workshop and a patient, sharp-eyed tutor at the other, is a breath taking and winning combination of talent and humility. I would happily enrol for all three courses again in a year's time simply as refreshers. The tuition, the workshop, the setting, the dogs, the biscuits, the outputs, the company and the craic are all grand! The White Lion, Alvanley do a splendid working lunch. Many thanks to the whole O'B family for sharing Ciarán with his students.

Having done some of Ciaran's other woodworking courses I knew this course would be excellent and it was.
Ciaran goes over all aspects of the lathe and the tools needed to produce quality items, whilst teaching you to do it in a safe manner. Very quickly you will be producing great items such as Honey Dippers, Pens, Seed Dibbers and Bowls. As there are four of you on the course Ciaran is always on hand to help as well as answer questions and most importantly you never feel rushed, which allows you to create your masterpieces.
From someone looking to take up Woodworking more seriously Ciaran also goes over how to sharpen your tools, which is really really invaluable. And as a real treat Ciaran takes you to a local pub for an excellent lunch and it gives you time to reflect on what you have learnt and bounce ideas off the other students.

Ciaran's woodturning course was excellent. He took us through the safety aspects, introduced us to the tools we would using, and then let us loose on the lathes. Brilliant, hands on learning which resulted in us our first turned items. I was so inspired by the course, that I'm now turning at home on a lathe I bought. I would highly recommend Ciaran's course.

My wife bought me the two day wood turning course as a present.
From the off Cairan was brilliant - First morning was going through safety, sharpening and the basics - excellently done. Then it was onto the lathes - that is what makes this course stand - it was so hands on!
Ciaran is an excellent instructor - his passion for wood is very evident. While we got going with wood turning he kept us going on tea and biscuits. Lunch was provided at a local pub.
End of the first day I was so chuffed at having turned a honey drizzler! The other items? Pen great, bowl likewise but the garden dibber? Maybe that should become part of a mortar and pestle!
Again Cairan thanks for an unforgettable 2 days - certainly made me thirsty to do more.

I got bought the 2 day wood turning course as a present. It was a throughly enjoyable course. Ciaran was a brilliant tutor - very knowledgeable, skilled, patient and fun. It was very hands on and I went away with several pieces I was really pleased with. I'd thoroughly recommend this and would jump at the chance if there was another wood turning course run by Ciaran.

I attended Ciarán's two day woodturning course, he took us over the basics and some required health and safety elements then got us straight on the lathe working away. Over the two days we produced a honey spoon, a garden dibber, and a small bowl, all the time giving practical hands on advice and guiding us through each step of producing wonderful items. Ciarán's love and passion for woodworking showed through his teaching and i've left the course feeling i've got some strong basic skills and the confidence to get me working on my own projects.
Its been an absolute privilege to be taught by Ciarán, and I hope to be able to take up more courses with him in the future.

A really enjoyable course with lots of opportunity for hands-on woodturning experience.
Ciaran is an excellent tutor who after an overview of the lathe and the tools to use, is available to offer his wealth of knowlege and experience, as we have the opportunity to use our newly gained knowledge to produce a number of completed and finished woodturned pieces.
A very rewarding and fulfilling 2 days of woodturning, with lunch at a great local pub as welcome refreshment. Well worth doing.

Ciaran is an excellent tutor. After a short introduction the small group of us got straight into turning with our own lathe for the two day course. The pace was driven by ourselves and with Ciaran's guidance we all got past our first go at a piece of timber then quickly produced works of art - honey dippers. We then made pens , bowls, and garden bulb dibbers.
Ciaran gave us all the tips to complete and finish objects using different woods and finishing oils. It was very satisfying to create really good pieces even when considering that we were all complete beginners.
Lunch at a local pub was a nice touch - no alcohol though! when working with machinery.
Great course, great tutor, great company great first woodworking presents. Top course!!!
