Simon Howard comes from a family of glass-workers and has been making striking and innovative stained glass for almost thirty years. You may have seen him recently demonstrating his craft on Channel 4’s ‘Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas‘.
This one-day course, hosted by Simon, is an introduction to the medieval craft of stained glass and is held at the beautiful Llangathen Hall, near Llandeilo, in rural Carmarthenshire
Over the course of the day Simon will show you how to design a panel, select and cut glass, ‘lead up’, solder and cement. You may either bring along a simple design of your own or research ‘simple stained glass patterns’ online.
The day will begin with an informal chat where ideas and designs will be discussed. With guidance, you will then produce a full-size drawing from which your chosen glass will be cut. Simon will show you how to correctly cut glass and help you in your choices of clear, coloured and textured glasses. The aim will be to cut the majority of the glass before lunch ready for ‘leading up’ when you return.
Lunch will be between 1pm and 2pm. You may like to bring your own lunch with you or enjoy Llandeilo’s many wonderful coffee shops and eateries nearby.
After lunch Simon will show you how to cut and form the lead strips (called ‘cames’); you will lead your glass together and finally, solder the joints. Simon will then instruct you how to cement your panel. You will be offered the chance to purchase a stand for each of the panels or hooks may be soldered to each panel in order that they can be hung.
The day will start at 9am and, depending on how ambitious the designs have been, finish around 6pm.
No previous experience of working with glass, lead or soldering irons is necessary; the course is suitable for absolute beginners and those wishing to improve on basic skills.
