About the Course
Do you fancy trying your hand at Spoon Carving?
I have been managing woodlands and developing traditional craft skills for the past 6 years at Northern Wood Monkey in Northumberland.
Come along and learn safe axe and knife skills in a comfortable environment and make your own spoon. No previous woodworking experience is necessary, though those with knowledge of working with wood will still find fresh challenges in the hand carved spoon.
The joy of spoon carving is that we don't need expensive tools, workshops and work benches. Just our hands and a few simple tools. You will develop skills to take away with you to be able to carve at home, sat outside on warm summers evenings or in front of the fire on those chilly winter nights.
We will work with a carving axe to split the log and safely 'rough out' the blank that we then carve into your finished spoon.
I will concentrate on giving you a knowledge of safe grips and cutting techniques with both a straight and bent (hook) knife which are the two that we use to make the spoon.
You will end the day with a spoon of your own and an overwhelming desire to carve more spoons - believe me it is addictive.
I will supply all the tools you need and a selection of wood to work with. I can give you information about where to go to buy good tools of your own if you want to take this further.
The venue is The Hearth, Main Road, Horsley, Northumberland, NE15 0NT

Excellent course, excellent tuition from Steve. Learned a lot which will come in handy for my work and hobby and came out with a spoon to top it all. Great to work along with like minded people too. Thank you.

We had an excellent day with Steve learning about working with wood and spoon carving. He was very nice, explained everything very clearly and helped us whenever we needed. It is definitely a great workshop if you want to try something new or start a new hobby. We learnt many new things. Thanks to Steve for all his hard work!

We really enjoyed the day making a wooden spoon. Steve is an excellent
teacher, explaining very clearly each step. He gives lots of individual attention
and is really encouraging. It’s a super experience and great fun.

Highly recommended course and very good value for money. I'd made a spoon by the end of the day which flew by, completely absorbing so much so I was surprised when told it was nearing the end of the day. I now have the knowledge to carry on at home and start a new hobby.

In 6 hours managed to make a wooden serving spoon from a hewn block of wood initially using an axe then various knives. Steve explained and demonstrated each stage of the process and helped each of us as required. It was challenging but a really great day. The whole day was very well organised and I would recommend it to anyone who likes working with wood and want to be able to create something interesting and useful.

Spent yesterday at the wooden spoon carving course at the Sill. A thoroughly enjoyable experience! All the steps were clearly described and demonstrated by Steve and with only five participants there was ample time for Steve to give one to one help and assistance where required. If you like working with wood then, like me, you will find green wood spoon carving an enjoyable new challenge and potentially an absorbing pastime!
