About the Course
This course is an introduction to the art of millinery.

Sunday 10am - 4pm
Working with experienced milliner Sally-Ann Provan, you will learn how to design and create your own made-to-measure hat from a woolfelt hood :– learn how to steam and block the felt, adjust the shape for proportion through free-form blocking if needed, stitch and wire it, and then create your own simple trimming and wear it!
Sally runs The Edinburgh Hat Studio designing and making hats and headpieces for private clients around the world, and theatre, TV, opera, and ballet companies. She has exhibited at London Fashion Week and her work has been shown in catwalk shows and at exhibitions around the world. She and her work have been featured in 3 books, on television, and regularly in magazines.
CHOOSE a colour of felt to work with ** Your woolfelt will be ordered especially for you and will be waiting for you when you arrive - we will send you a link so you can have a look at the woolfelt colour chart on the website to help you decide which colour to choose in advance of the workshop. CHOOSE which hat blocks to use - advice will be given to help you achieve the finished shape you'd like to make, considering proportion and face shape. Choose from brimless cocktail hat, fedora, trilby, cloche, brimmed hat etc...LEARN the skills to steam and block, stiffen, wire, edge, and trim your hat effectively. There is also a small library of millinery books to study and inspire.
No experience required, but you will need some hand sewing skills.
** Feel free to bring along any fabrics or trimmings you may want to use, or you can purchase additional trimmings/feathers at the workshop, or local fabrics and haberdashery shop.

What's included in the price?
Included - Cost includes tuition and use of equipment, a woolfelt hood in a colour of your choice, wire, simple feathers, petersham ribbon in the colour/s of your choice for the headfitting and to make a simple hatband/trim to complete your hat.
You don’t need to bring anything!
Also included - Activities are fuelled by teas, coffees and biscuits from vintage teacups and saucers, (*this is a 2-day course - and a light lunch is provided on both days ** please inform us in advance of any dietary requirements or allergies and we will do our best to accommodate this – you can also bring your own lunch if you prefer).
