Linocut basics - an introduction for beginners

trialling different gouges

Learn the basic principles of linocut printing. You will be working on one 10x15cm (A6, postcard size) design, and I will guide you through all the steps from planning, transferring, carving and proofing, to printing your design. You'll be in the friendly environment of my kitchen studio, with tea/coffee and biscuits provided to fuel your creativity. I have vintage books and illustrations for inspiration, but please feel free to bring along your own sketches. You will be working with traditional art linoleum, professional carving tools and a Victorian cast-iron printing press.

No printmaking experience required, and people of all ages and artistic abilities are welcome. Even if you think you can't draw, you WILL be able to print! I can adapt my course for family groups with older children and special educational needs. If you have any access needs, please do contact me and I will do my best to adapt my equipment to your requirements.

Please note:
* There is a strict parking limit of 2 free hours on the road outside, the course will therefore begin and end promptly to prevent you from getting a parking ticket!*
* I will not provide any tools or equipment to take home*
* your prints will likely take a few days to dry thoroughly, as we will be working with professional oil-based inks. I will wrap them securely in tissue paper and provide instructions on drying at home*

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

My daughter and I spent a really enjoyable morning learning how to linocut and we made numerous prints to take away. Judith is lovely and friendly, and very talented. The course cost was very reasonable too. I would definitely recommend.

Response from Rambling Hen Prints:

Hi Ali and Sarah, thank you so much for your lovely review! It was great fun teaching you and I hope the recipients of your handprinted Easter cards will be very impressed!

Zoe - - #38571

As two complete novices we found Judith to be a great teacher and we were delighted and proud of our efforts at the end. Looking forward to a revisit and learning more. Judith’s own work was an inspiration. A wonderful way to spend a morning.

Response from Rambling Hen Prints:

Dear Zoe and Julia, thank you for your lovely review! I very much enjoyed teaching you - you both created such great prints!
