About the Course
The course takes place in my own purpose-built studio, which is a working studio and as such is fully equipped for almost all forms of glass-making.
There are so many aspects to kiln-formed glass making that this course can only act as a basic introduction. These starter sessions are designed to give you the basic techniques to make beautiful objects which may be sculptural or functional. This 6 session course is designed for people who have never worked with glass before, and also acts as a refresher course for those who have.
The course is prescriptive for the first 6 weeks in order to establish the basic techniques. Students are then encouraged to join the ‘follow-on’ sessions where they can design and make their own unique glass.
Session 1: We start with cutting glass, and then kiln-carving with clear glass.
Session 2: We make glass jewellery, including a piece of dichroic glass jewellery. We learn to use a microwave kiln; and learn glass engraving.
Session 3: We start using coloured flat glass sheets to make a picture or plate using cut glass.
Session 4: We make glass tapestry using powdered glasses.
Session 5: We make a glass bowl using frits and powders.
Session 6: We design and make a functional object using the techniques from the previous sessions, and discuss what other techniques may be suitable.
As each student works at a different rate and has different design ideas it is not possible to include the cost of the glass used or the kiln-firing costs in the session cost, and these will be charged separately.
Each session lasts for 3 hours and must be booked and paid for in advance. The cost of individual sessions is £30. If 6 sessions are booked and paid for in advance the cost is reduced to £145.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
