About the Course
This course is ideal for beginners with an interest in ceramics and who wish to participate in an enjoyable practical ceramics course.
You will have the opportunity to develop skills in hand building principals, coiling, slab building, pinching and surface relief for ceramics including under glazing and glazing. You will be given the opportunity towards the end of the course to develop a final piece in your `Guided making time`, which will be linked to you research and sketchbook practice.
The course runs for 8 weeks at Creative Studio York Clifton Moor with a week’s break, as holiday and research time!
During the sessions there will be chance to make work inspired be other ceramic artists so do bring any visual information, books etc to the first session so we can tailor your ceramic experience with your interests. Our theme for the first session is Ancient Egypt and each week we will change the theme to bring out new ways of designing and thinking.
You will need to bring a sketchbook to each session which will be handy for recording and designing.
Course Tutor- Francesca King BA Hons 3D Design Glass with Ceramics, PGCE FE & Secondary.
Francesca has over 20 years teaching practice in all areas of Art and Design. Her specialist subject is Ceramics. As a keen tutor and enthusiastic ceramicist she runs workshops for all ages from Nursery, Secondary to Adult Education. Learning new skills is at the heart of her practice, `We teach each other through experimenting and observation`.
Francesca`s work reflects her interest in geological layering of the Earth`s physical structure and it`s landscape, using natural materials to create texture and structures for her vessels and tiles. Her work often holds a story hidden within a single picture or linked with a series, the newest of these is “The Boy Who Climbed a Cloud”, a children`s book available on Amazon.
2017 was the beginning of a new range of wearable ceramic art brooches, earrings and pendants with butterfly and floral themes Francesca sells these through CoCA and other galleries.
