Beginners 6 Week Learn Dressmaking Course – covers all the basic skills required to start making your own clothes at home. Designed for complete beginners, from learning to use your sewing machine from scratch to making your own skirt and blouse by the end of the 6 weeks. Attendees have fun, enjoy the learning as well as the social aspect of meeting each week and are amazed at what they can achieve in just 6 short weeks.

Course Content By Week:
All the basics you will need to know to be a competent and confident dressmaker – from how to use your sewing machine to making your first blouse and skirt.

wk 1: How To Use Your Sewing Machine:
* How to set up and thread a sewing machine
Getting to grips with stitching – tips for straight lines, curves and corners
* Different stitch types: straight, zig-zag, button-holing
* What your machine sewing feet attachments do and the projects you will need them on
* How to check sewing tension and adjusting this
* Identifying common problems with your sewing machine and fixing them
* Tips on getting into sewing – easy project ideas, essential tools and how to choose a sewing machine

wk 2: All About Patterns & Fabrics:
* Choosing the right kind of fabric for your project and where to buy it from
* Different pattern types: commercial, freebies, paper & PDF
* Material planning
* Understanding sewing patterns
* Cutting out fabric using your pattern for a skirt which we will make over the next few weeks

wk 3: Getting confident with Buttonholes and Zips:
* Stitching buttons by hand or machine
* Button holing techniques by hand and machine
* Hand stitching a looped buttonholes
* Inserting a simple zip and a concealed zip
* Applying the above to your skirt project

wk 4: Seams, Hems, Waistbands & Pockets
* Seams: stitching straight seams, corners and curves and how to finish them
* Waistband types: where to use them and how to make a waistband with facing
* Hems: handsewn & machine sewn (including blind hem stitch)
* Pockets – concealed & patch
*Applying the above to your skirt project

wk 5: Collars, Cuffs, Sleeves & Interfacing
* Different types and styles of collar – practice making a flat or Peter Pan collar
* Look at the differences between puff sleeves, cap sleeves and long sleeves with cuffs and how to make them
* How to insert a sleeve – and practice on a blouse project you will undertake
*Overview of different cuff and opening types plus make a single cuff with faced opening
You will also learn about how and where to use interfacing for collars & cuffs
Applying the above to your blouse project

wk 6: Finishing Your Skirt & Blouse Projects
As this is the final week, you can finish your skirt or blouse project or start on another one

What To Bring With You:
Each week you will receive an email advising what you will need to bring to the following week’s workshop but in general you will need the following:
* Sewing kit with good sharp dressmaking scissors, paper scissors, hand sewing needles, pins (plastic heads), air or water soluble fabric markers or chalks
* Your sewing machine, power cable & foot pedal as well as instruction manual (please make sure your machine is in good working order before you bring it).
If you don’t own a sewing machine, we have lovely Janome 3300 sewing machines which you can hire to use for the day.
Please book these when booking your workshop place.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
