Description

A rewarding 3 hours (or more) of ‘making stuff’ here in my well-equipped studio, within the beautiful City of York.

The unique thing about this session is that you propose the project, and I help you realise it. Maybe you've seen a craft project and need help with it; maybe you want to make a not-on-the-high-street gift; maybe you "just need this thing" and can't find one to buy.

Before booking a session(s) we'll have a chat about your project idea and firm up a few details. Typically, we'll exchange a few photos and / or sketches to explore ideas. It may also be a good idea for you to drop into my workshop and we can discuss things in more detail.

At this point I'll be able to tell you how many hours we'll need to put aside and any additional preparation / materials costs.

Whether we go for a full day(s) or shorter session(s) I’m sure you’ll have had fun, learnt one or two things and ultimately be able to proudly say “I made that”. Of course, you’ll also have your finished work.

Depending on your project, you’ll learn to safely use a range of hand tools, also some bench power-tools (fret saw, pillar drill, belt sander).

Sessions usually run at these times. Please contact to discuss flexibility.
Mon/Tue/Weds (advertised dates). 13:00 till 16:00 or 19:00 till 22:00
Saturdays (advertised dates). 13:00 till 16:00

**Who is the course suitable for?**
For novices:

No skill or experience necessary. Full instruction is given and only two participants means you get lots of guidance if you need it.

For those with existing skills and experience:

Maybe you don’t have access to a workshop at the moment but are feeling creative. Or you might want to make a surprise gift for someone. Perhaps you just want to do something fun with a relative or friend.

Participants must be over 14 years. Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult whom also purchases a place (due to limited space).

Unfortunately, this activity is not fully accessible. But, please get in touch to discuss any specific access requirements you have and I’ll try to accommodate them.

Additionally, for this particular activity, you’ll need to be comfortable standing at a high workbench for periods of time and capable of completing manual tasks, with instruction.

Where?
My studio is at my family home, not far from York city centre. On arrival, please come up the drive (which confusingly is round the corner on Critchen Avenue).

Foot: 30min walk from York Station, 20min from York Minster (city centre).

Bike: There’s plenty of off-street space to lock your bike up.

Bus: Route 6, getting off at Intake Avenue.

Car: Wiggington Road is the nearest Pay and Display, about 300m away.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

**Final cost to be agreed depending on specific project. To be agreed before booking.

Full instruction from myself. I’m a qualified First Aider and have up to date training in the safe use of the tools used. As I also work in a school, I’m DBS checked.

Use of well equipped workshop. Well lit and thermally comfortable.

Safety eyewear is essential. Aprons, ear defenders and disposable gloves are also provided but optional. You can bring your own of any of these if you prefer.

All tools and materials are provided.

Very basic (think ‘emergency’) camping toilet facilities.

What To Bring

Wear clothes you don’t mind potentially getting daubed with paint.

Clothes should have nothing dangling that could get caught in the machines.

Closed toe footwear with a reasonably slip resistant sole is essential.

Bring a means of fastening back long hair, whilst on the machines.

Don’t forget your prescription glasses if you need them to read or safety operate machinery.

If the weather is fine, bring protection from the sun, as we maybe outside abit.

It’s not essential to have short finger nails, but you may find it more practical.
