Beginner to Confident is a short course that fits neatly in-between the Weekly Open Art sessions (that are a social group with individual coaching) and the short Starter sessions that are an introduction to drawing or a specific medium in a simple 2hr session.
If you have little or no idea how to draw, use pastels or where to start then this could be a great way, learning the 'how' along with the 'why' a little theory, for the first 3 weeks, then bringing it all together in a final drawing or mixed media artwork in week 4.
This is a lovely mix of theory nuggets (what's a focal point, why do we need them and how many should we have?) interspersed with plenty of short practical exercises such as observation skills, sighting, working with grids etc. This course brings together drawing skills and pastel techniques, something that is difficult to do in the Starter Workshop.
Discover what works best for you, grids (loved by some, loathed by others) or containers (again, loved by some loathed by others).
In a small group of 6 you will find out exactly how to use your materials and tools with simple little adjustments that I suggest when I observe you drawing - the beauty of a small group!
The main focus will be working with pastels, soft/hard; sticks/pencils along with all the tools available to you to achieve wonderful effects quickly and easily.
If time allows other drawing media will be available for you to experiment with (charcoal sticks and pencils, watercolours) to broaden your experience and encourage you to try new things and see how many different mediums work well together and make wonderful 'mixed media' art. These will be available to you to choose from a central table when you wish, but the focus will always be on your progression to becoming a confident artist.
Art is a very personal thing... there's no right or wrong way, there's only the way that works best for you. So, if you're struggling to know how or where to start why not join me and a few budding artists to help you become a confident, happy artist.
These sessions will run straight through from 1.15 to 3.15 with no specific break, so if you think you will need a drink or some biscuits please bring them with you.
Everything else is provided for you with the exception of old shirts or something to protect your clothes.
Please note that this is a new course and so has an introductory price in September. It's sister course, Beginner to Confident in a Month - Drawing running in August, will also have an introductory price, but this will increase for both courses from October.
As drawings from these 4 week courses become available more will be added to those seen in the intro... hopefully one of the new ones will be yours?
Refunds aren't available due to the small number of artists but substitutions are welcome. In this way you can get your money back and the course remains viable. Simply let me know who is taking your place.
Refunds are not available on this booking. Start dates may be amended on request.
Your own box of principle materials for use during the sessions:
- different forms of graphite pencils, tools and papers
- handouts where applicable
- a variety of other types of drawing media to 'try before you buy'
- homework for those who have time to complete it and want to progress quickly
- on completion of the course, a small certificate as a celebration of your success!

A relaxed, informal and informative workshop with the emphasis on enjoyment. Lots of tools and tips to help beginners see a subject through an artist’s eyes. Kate loves teaching - and it shows. Highly recommended.
Response from Kate West:Hi Christina, thank you for taking the time to leave a review it’s much appreciated as was your contribution to making it such an enjoyable afternoon (they are not always quite as good as this one as the artists themselves help make it, but shhh don’t say anything!) Kate 🙂
I attended Kate's 'Pastel Starter Workshop' last week and would recommend this course to anyone, who is either thinking of using pastels, or is coming back to using them after a period of time.
The session was a real hands-on, 'have a go' afternoon. We learned about different types and brands of pastels and also about a range of papers and techniques.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable workshop with participants encouraged to give their thoughts and opinions about the various brands being used and also about their experiences of using pastels.
Kate offers participants in her workshops the benefit of her huge experience and very obvious skills, but alongside this she is hugely encouraging and supportive.
Thank you, Kate for another very enjoyable afternoon.
Response from Kate West:Hi Christine, really pleased you enjoyed the workshop and found it useful and huge thanks for providing yet another thoughtful review that will help others decide whether or not the Pastel starter workshop will be useful to them.
I enjoyed this drawing workshop as I had never been to one before and it made me look at images in a different way. Trying out different types of pencils was very illuminating and has whet the appetite to pursue this hobby.
Response from Kate West:Hi Caroline, thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. You helped create a lovely 'working' group and so good to know that you now see the world a little differently and are inspired to pursue your creativity!
Excellent introduction to drawing. Kate was an extremely good teacher - patient and kind. The afternoon was very well structured with instruction and mini exercises first and then time to put it all into practice by creating our own drawing. Plenty of supplies available to try different pencils etc. All in all a very enjoyable and instructive afternoon.
Response from Kate West:Hello Gilly, Caroline, Jane and Pip, not sure which one of you lovely ladies has left such wonderful review but whoever it was thank you!
I've attended 2 of Kate's workshops (Watercolour Starter, and Drawing Starter), have signed up for the Pastels Starter and hope to be able to attend one of the Pastels Portrait workshops. Kate's very keen that you take away not just plenty of information at the end of the session, but most of the time is hands-on, with opportunities to try new techniques. She keeps the number of attendees low, so there's plenty of time for one-to-one guidance. Thank you, Kate.
Response from Kate West:Hi Colin, thank you for taking the time to leave a review and your kind comments. Thanks also for the enthusiasm and participation you brought to the sessions! Great to know that you have enjoyed the sessions and looking forward to working with you again for the pastel workshops.
Loved Kate's course. Her passion for pastels is infectious and her kind, gentle and interactive approach to teaching made it very enjoyable. I have had pastels for years and not done much with them, but Kate has given me the motivation and inspiration to really get going with them!
Give it a try you won't be dissapointed I had a lovely morning with Katie and the small group that attended that day. Course moved at a nice pace and I learnt some great tips. I was by far the most ammateur in the group having not lifted any piece of art equipment since leaving school some twenty years ago!! However the friendly nature of the group and tutour meant that I did not feel intimidated in any way and hope to be going on another of Katies courses very soon. It has given me some passion back and I hope (if I can find the time!!) to put what I have learnt into practice. Thank You Katie :)
A lovely three hours, lots of information given and a host of materials to experiment with. I didn’t finish my pieces, but left with lots of enthusiasm!
