About the Course

This beginner workshop is designed for those who are interested in learning to weave, but have never woven on a loom before. It is an introductory course that will give you a chance to learn to weave on a few different styles of table looms. Before you delve into the more complex issues of how to warp the loom, how to calculate how much yarn you need, how to design or choose a pattern, I think it is best to try to weave something to see if you like the process of weaving and creating cloth.

I have 2 styles of table looms available – a Rigid heddle loom and an Ashford 4 shaft table loom. Each loom has its advantages and are designed for making different styles of cloth. You will have the opportunity to try both. Both looms are pre-warped so you don’t need to learn the complicated stuff just yet.

4 Shaft Table Loom
The Ashford Table Loom has been pre-warped with multi-coloured cotton yarns and has been threaded to a variation of twill pattern designs. Using the table loom you will be able to weave a small tea towel and experiment with the use of colour and pattern in the project.

Rigid Heddle Loom
The rigid heddle loom is a 2 shaft loom that is suitable for weaving simple cloth such as wooly scarves or placemats using thicker yarns. With the use of pickup sticks or leno lace techniques more complex weave structures can be woven. You can also do free-form weaving with thick multi-coloured yarns creating a tapestry style of weave.
The Ashford rigid heddle loom has been pre-warped and is ready to go. A selection of hand spun and commercial weft yarns are available for you to weave with to create your own design.
