Description:

This plant dye course is designed for the beginner. You will learn the basics of how to dye linen, cotton and silk fabrics with traditional and locally sourced plant dyes. The workshop will include dyes such as Madder (oranges and pinks) Weld (yellow) and Indigo (blue) as well as other plant dyes (birch bark, elderberry, alkanet, lichen) and other dye plants that are in season and have been sourced locally. We will cover information about how to safely use different mordants suitable for plant and protein fibres, how to collect local dye plants and how to prepare a mordant and plant dye bath.

We will cover some Shibori resist dye methods using traditional Japanese knotting and stitching techniques for adding additional patterning to the dyed fabrics. You will go away with a plant dyed cotton scarf, an indigo vat dyed cotton scarf, and several fabric dye samples of silk, linen and cotton materials.

All dyes and course materials will be provided.

Tea, coffee and a light snack will be provided.
