Batik on Paper

Batik on Paper
X

Description

Learn the basic techniques of batik, using hot wax and dyes.

In this one-day workshop you can expect to produce several colourful batik papers, in which you demonstrate a variety of techniques. You may also produce a collage of some of these papers.

Working on a selection of plain newsprint, black and white newspaper, coloured newspaper, black tissue paper and coloured tissue paper, you will learn how to use the canting (tool for applying the wax) as well as other methods of applying the wax. The whole paper is then covered with a layer of dye. When dry, more wax is applied to “save” areas of the dye and a second dye is applied. The process is repeated until only small areas remain unwaxed, and the final, dark dye is applied. You will repeat this process on a number of different papers, and may then put some of these together to make a collage.
