About the Course

Learn how to weave strips of flat paper into a three dimensional basket using the technique of plaiting. Starting with colour strips to learn the technique, use the skills learnt to weave a second plaited basket working with decorative paper. Learn how to weave a base, turn the corner, weave the sides and finish the ends. The day is intended as a skills based day; to try out a technique or perhaps as a refresher. At the end of the day students should take home two finished baskets.
Workshops are suitable for beginners and those with a little more experience. I will demonstrate the technique, provide visual notes and offer individual support. All materials and equipment will be provided. Students might like to bring a notebook, pencil and camera. Reading glasses may be required for close work.

About Mary:
From a childhood spent making, I now make small woven non-functional decorative objects. Originally learning to make traditional willow baskets, an introduction to textile basketry and the suggestion to try some different materials took my making in a new direction. A large portion of my practice is sharing what I do. With a background in primary teaching and museum education, I greatly enjoy running workshops and giving talks; sharing my enthusiasm for making and the passing on of skills. My aim is to introduce new audiences to basketry in the hope that they may find it as exciting as I do.I am a member of the Basketmakers’ Association and a Yeoman Member of The Worshipful Company of Basketmakers.
