About the Course

Discover the magic of basket making

On this workshop we will be making a form of traditional potato basket or sciathog. Commonly made throughout Ireland but there was a great centre of basketmaking in the North of Ireland in and around Gawley’s Gate, Aghagallon and Aghalee in the south east corner of County Antrim close to the shores of Lough Neagh where the potato baskets were made in great numbers. The small versions we will be making were used to ‘teem’ and serve potatoes while the large version was used as a potato harvesting basket.

You will be supplied with a pre formed hoop and an explanation of how the hoop was formed will be given.

You will get the opportunity to see some of Clive’s baskets, more unusual tools and a range of books will be available for browsing during breaks.

Camping is possible on site.

Clive Lyttle of Welig Heritage Crafts is a basketmaker, willow artist and multi skilled craftsman. He studied Biological Sciences at the University of Ulster in Coleraine; he worked in environmental conservation, developed interests in traditional arts and crafts, and found his niche in basketmaking.
