Description:

3 day residential willow basket weaving workshop at the beautiful Margam Discovery Centre.

Friday 12 May to Sunday 14 May 2017

The art of basket making was developed early on in man’s evolution. Early baskets would have been made with wild materials gathered locally for harvesting fruit and vegetables or making strong rigid containers necessary for everyday life. In Britain oak, hazel and willow were commonly used and the weaving of willow using different techniques developed into a profession. On this course you will learn the techniques to make a beautiful round shopping basket of your own. The course is suitable for complete beginners or for those who want to want to expand their knowledge of weaves, borders and handles.

Out to Learn Willow are a small company based in the Vale of Glamorgan, specialising in all aspects of working with willow. We provide fun and creative willow weaving workshops; beginners baskets, garden structures, willow sculpture, living willow and much more. We are also makers of willow craft and traditional baskets.

Things we will do
Learn about the cultivation, harvesting and use of willow as a craft resource.
How to sort and prepare materials ready for basket making.
Practice the stages of making a traditional stake and strand round basket complete with handle.

By the end of the course participants will:
Know the process of making a small round basket using the traditional stake and strand method.
Gain knowledge of different weaves, borders and putting in a handle to extend their basket making skills.

What could be more satisfying then making your own willow basket. The materials that you will be working with are all completely natural and the processes have been passed down through the generations. Your basket will be practical, strong and robust and completely individual to you.

What to bring:
Comfortable clothes, we will be sitting down for a lot of the time.
Tools will be provided although you may want to bring a pair of favourite secateurs.
A camera may be useful to record the different stages of basket making.
If you’ve already made a few baskets and have your own tools, you’re welcome to bring them.

Materials that you will be working with are entirely natural and more often than not, you will use damp soaked willow so please wear appropriate clothing - nothing too smart and definitely no white!

What's included in the price?

All tools and materials will be provided and you will take home whatever you make.

The fee also includes accommodation in your own room. Please enquire about the fees for shared room occupancy as well as non-residential rates (tuition only).
