If you’re passionate about ballet costumes or a dancer’s mum wanting to make your own professional quality tutu plate, this course is for you. You will learn what materials to choose to make a 10 layers net tutu plate in adult or child’s size and the techniques to produce this garment to a high standard. This is a rare opportunity to gain the specialist skills from an expert currently making tutus for prestigious UK companies such as the Royal Ballet.
The Plate Tutu is a very short, stiff skirt made with layers of net that extends straight out from the hips in a flat plate shape and is really a couture dress made for a ballerina It was developed to show off the ballerina’s pointe work and is worn with a fitted bodice. On this course you will make the ‘Plate’/skirt section. Some sewing in your own time will be required if you want to take full advantage of the course. You must have reached an intermediate level of experience working with patterns and constructing garments and be equipped with good machine and hand sewing skills.

This Online course will be delivered partly as pre-recorded lessons in Microsoft Teams meetings. The pre recorded lessons will be available for the duration of the course and can be viewed at each student’s pace. The tutor will be available for support and further explanation on Saturdays via Microsoft Teams with a further hour on Wednesday for questions and answers. The 16.5 hours include student construction/sewing time. After examining and discussing examples and samples, the tutor will discuss suitable materials and pattern shapes and use video lessons of appropriate cutting and stitching, construction and finishing methods. You will be able to develop a Plate Tutu Ballet skirt & you may need to finish this in your own time, depending on your existing skills and speed. PDF pattern and charts will be used as support for design and skill development. Teaching will be online and on group virtual meetings. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment, by submitting pictures or videos of your work.
