How do I know if this is for me?
This workshop really is suitable for any artist or curious creative at any level. Here is Jane a professional artist talking about her experience taking ‘Art of the Sketchbook.’

“It is gentle and inspiring. Mel’s warmth and creative generosity is really encouraging. I've already started developing ideas to turn into paintings. Art of the Sketchbook - is the perfect antidote.

It is suitable for professional artists and complete beginners alike and I hope it will lead to people everywhere dusting off their blank sketchbooks, or buying new ones, and filling them with with delicious experiments, exciting compositions and new ideas like I have.

Thanks Mel you've really charged my flat battery 😍”

Gaye started painting and drawing only last year. Here is her feedback on this online workshop.

“Mel, I’m loving your on line course, I really am.  I’m learning so much. I’ve discovered that when I’m ‘mark making’ I’m actualy trying to create pictures rather than just marks and effects and then disappointing myself. It suddenly dawned on me when watching your 4th workshop lesson, so I’m starting again from scratch with glee!”

When you POP ACROSS TO MY WEBSITE, you will FIND 2 FILMS that give greater insight into what ‘Art Of The Sketchbook’ can offer you.

These experiments are created and used to disrupt the blank page and help compose creative sketchbook pages.

All the while giving you practical tasks and tips on colour theory, mark making and composition, with insights into my own artistic practice.

The Creative Tasks are ...
1Changing pages
2 Exploring materials
3 Disrupting the page
4 Exploring your visual language
Bonus Feature on Mark Making
5 The creative journey continues

Free ... I gift you a seascapes lesson at the end of your six lessons.

What you will need

You can use whichever sketchbook you have or takes your fancy. I demonstrate using a square Pink Pig sketchbook with150gsm paper inside.
The good news is ... what ever materials you have to hand, dry or wet. E.g. pencils, pens, ink, paint ... as the creative principles apply to all.

My preferred materials are acrylic inks, acrylic paint and watercolour pencils. Therefore these are the materials I will be using throughout demonstrations.

I will be showing you primarily how to work in the materials above. This doesn't mean other materials aren't relevant. Including oil pastels, chalk pastels, a pan box of watercolours, acrylic inks, watercolour pencils, fine line pens, graphite pencils, the list is endless.

Useful Equipment
A water spray bottle, palette knife, square ended brush, household candle.

Art Shopping Treats
Box of pan watercolours
Acrylic inks (start with 2 bottles)
Water colour pencils might be useful too (start with 2 colours)

My advice, buy the colours you are attracted to. One darker colour and one lighter/brighter colour of inks and watercolour pencils.
A larger cheap tube of white paint - System 3 Acrylic serves me well.

More Detail
Here are my favourite colours, if you would like to buy singles. Watch out for prices, some colours are much more expensive than others.
Titanium white - Prussian Blue - Olive Green- Cadmium Yellow - Paynes Grey - Cadmium Red - Alizarin Crimson
Expensive colours - Naples Yellow - Phthlo Blue (green hue.)
