About the Course

This is a very exciting, creative art clay course with places limited to a maximum of 4.

Learn to make your own unique jewellery using a variety of art clays - no previous experience is necessary.

Silver clay is one of a range of precious metal clays which you can use, along with gold (as clay or paste), as well as base metals such as copper.

All metals clays are fine metal powder mixed with a binder to create malleable clay that can be moulded, textured, rolled and cut out. The clay is then dried before being fired with a torch (which can be done using an inexpensive torch at home) or with a kiln to produce a solid piece of metal. We will be demonstrating firing with a torch so you know what you can achieve in a home environment.

You will also have access to a kiln for firing gold precious metals as well as base metals. Kiln firing also give you access to setting and firing in place a wider range of stones and gems than you can with torch firing, as well as the possibility to learn how to enamel your pieces, and to learn Keum Boo - ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver (the gold is burnished to the silver surface while hot).

Fine silver clay when fired, results in 99.9% fine silver pieces, which are of a quality to be hallmarked. Sterling silver clay is also available as is gold in various forms - all high quality which may be hallmarked.

Metal clays are supplied in a variety of forms including clay (has a wide variety of uses), syringe (adding detail and filigree), paste (joining and adding textures)

Classes are held weekly on Wednesdays for 8 weeks. Please ask for exact dates as there are not any classes for this course in school holidays.
