About the Course

Learn specialist, photo-realism graphite pencil techniques for drawing animals, during this 2 day intermediate/advanced level workshop with Bex Gouverneur.

On the first day, Bex will introduce you to the materials that you will be using, leading you through a series of small exercises to create a range of tones and textures in a realistic style. Next, you will plan and draft out your image ready for drawing on the second day, using a grid technique to achieve a highly accurate contour drawing.

Day two will consist of independent work on your final drawing, with guidance and assistance from Bex on hand throughout the day.

What to bring:

A set of good quality graphite pencils from H – 6B

An 8B Staedler Mars Lumograph Black pencil

A Tombow Mono Zero round eraser

A putty rubber

Soft bristled round brush for blending (approx. size 6-10)

Materials fee:

2 sheets of Dayler Rowney Heavyweight Smooth paper will be provided free of charge per student. Additional sheets will cost 50p per sheet.

A full materials pack can be purchased directly from the artist on the day for £35. You are welcome to source and bring your own materials.

Due to the nature of the techniques used and level of detail achieved in this work, it can take between 10 and 20 hours to fully complete a drawing. During the course, students can expect to have partially completed one drawing and to have gained the knowledge and understanding to continue working at home.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Tea, Coffee, biscuits and cold refreshments will be available throughout the day. Lunch is not provided although The Phoenix Kitchen, just next door, provides an array of meals, light lunches and snacks. Alternatively, there is a fridge and microwave in the studio kitchen for you to use if you would prefer to bring your own lunch.

I thought the standard of teaching was very high. At no point did I feel ignorant and I learnt a huge amount. I felt very encouraged as well as inspired.
