Marbled papers appeal to all ages & can be made in many different ways using more or less complex methods. This course will provide an easy introduction to traditional style marbling using gouache & watercolour paints floated on carragheenan (which Victoria will prepare in advance). Participants will be able to make many familiar marbled paper patterns on the first day including stone, curl & comb designs, with further possibilities & the opportunity to explore their own ideas on the second day. You will have a large selection of papers to take away ready for use in bookbinding, card making, etc.
Marbled papers have been used for centuries to cover books & objects. The course will include a comprehensive introduction to the history of marbling & will be well illustrated with original handling material.
Victoria Hall began making decorated papers professionally in 1989 from a studio based in Norwich, Norfolk having attained a degree in the History of Art & Architecture at the University of East Anglia. She has particular expertise in replicating historic marbled & paste papers used for restoration work, although she also loves creating new designs, including unique, richly-coloured contemporary paste papers. She enjoys making papers to commission for specific projects whether old or new & recently completed 700 matching marbled papers for ‘The Highgrove Florilegium’. From suminagashi papers to marbled flowers, her range is particularly extensive & continually developing.
