About the Course

An Introduction to Natural Dyeing

Join us for an evening of naturally dyeing textiles using our surrounding horticulture. In this practical workshop you will be invited to explore the potential of natural colours that lie in off cuts of fruits, vegetables and plants we discard everyday. Each participant will go home with their own naturally dyed fabric and yarn skeins in a mixture of organic cotton and wool.

Open to people of all ages, the workshop will offer an activity for those interested in learning more about sustainable processes and alternatives to chemical based dyes. It aims to attract people who are interested in gardening, food and a shared goal of reducing the amount of waste they produce. You will learn what to forage and what to keep from your kitchen scraps. The sessions will be beginner level, ideal for someone with little to no knowledge of natural dyeing.

Workshops are split into two themes: Fruit & Vegetables and Dried Plants & Herbs. Each session will lead to a variety of colour outcomes for your hand dyed textiles. All materials will be provided. Please click on 'View website' for details of which course runs on each date.

Fruit & vegetables:
In this beginner level workshop, participants will learn how to naturally dye yarn and fabric. Using the colours that lie in off-cuts of fruits and vegetables we discard everyday, outcomes will range from the vibrant oranges of onion skins to the subtle pinks found in avocados. Knowledge will be learnt and shared through the process of hand dyeing.

Dried plants & herbs:
Discover the shades that lie in vegetation which fall to the ground everyday. A selection of leaves, spices and herbs will be explored in this session, each producing a variety of colour outcomes. Through the act of dyeing and skill sharing, we will be encouraging an engagement between materials, tools and each other
