Nicholas Ball is a fabric addict from Cardiff, South Wales. After graduating Art School in 2006, it would be some six years before the quilting bug bit. With a passion for improv quilting, Nicholas' aesthetic is an organic one, preferring to sew without the use of patterns or templates. He takes a lot of inspiration from natural world and his Vegetable Patch quilts showcase his love for liberated sewing. He has taught improv quilting both nationally and internationally, contributed to the UK leading quilting magazines and was a co-presenter of the QNNTV show ‘Quilt Monkey’, alongside fellow UK quilter Katy Jones. His debut book ‘Inspiring Improv’ was published in April 2019 by Lucky Spool and his co-ordinating Aurifil thread collection followed in August.
Class description : - This day with Nicholas will be an introduction to improvised quilting focusing on 3 of Nicholas' techniques, free hand curves, triangle and inserts. This is a great class for those who are a little intimidated by free hand sewing. In the introduction to improvisation class, Nicholas will first share a number of his quilts with the students and the stories behind their creation. Nicholas loves finding inspiration from unusual places and translating it into fabric. We’ll then start sewing using his triangle, curves and slabs techniques. These quick and easy units can then be mixed and matched in all manner of ways. Perfect for beginners and those who have never approached improvisation before, the class will show you how a liberated approach to sewing will open up a world of creative possibilities!
